Houston has 4 sports radio stations. AM 790 and FM 97.5 (Houston's ESPN affiliate) are the two worst in my opinion. I personally believe 1560 is the best among the 4 stations. Lance Zierlein and John Granato have the best show in town. I don't even think this one is debatable. Second best, to me, is the Sean "The Cablinasian" Pendergast (5-time winner of the Jim Rome smackoff) and John Harris show. Sean is great for entertainment and John Harris brings a lot of football knowledge to the table. 610 has Matt Jackson and Marc Vandermeer (voice of the Houston Texans), both of whom I think are very good. Unfortunately, 610 decided to pair Matt with a giant blowhard in Rich Lord and Marc with Andre Ware, who is incredibly boring to listen to. Having listened to the Carmichael Dave show for the past week, I have no doubt in my mind that his show would be a better fit with the guys at 1560. That's just how I see it.
Ok Lance, we get it...1560 is the best!! I still prefer 610 and 790 to 1560. More often than not, when I turn on 1560 in the mornings, they're not talking about sports. In the afternoons the signal is worse, and the hosts are worse, imo. MattJ, regardless of who paired with, is better, and Charlie is probably the best. So I mainly switch between the original two, but will venture out here and there.
tell me more about 790. i gotta be honest, I make it a point to not just do sports.....when there are sports to talk about, we're all over it. However, there is definitely an "entertainment/pop culture" effect as well.
You can always sample the shows on the websites to find out first hand whether you agree with what people say or not. Generally, I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with the radio stations in Houston, a lot of the Rockets fans are kinda disappointed they don't pay enough attention to the NBA. Like people say, this is more of a football/baseball town. The Rockets make good money, but the arena is never all that pumped up due to the fact that expensive seats go to corporate folks (who wants to get rowdy when you are out with a client?)
I'm sorry, but Houston is just kind of a weak sports town (sometimes I guess). In Dallas, they seem to have more passionate fans for the Cowboys/Mavs/Stars. I think having a team like the Cowboys helped out every other sports franchise in DFW. ESPN 103.3 makes more revenue than all of Houston's sports stations combined I heard. We're getting better in Houston though, as the Texans get better and the Rockets with another big name coming in. Some of the calls still make me cringe though.
If you decide to leak on the alamo, I'll volunteer to be the lookout. Hell i'll even one up you and drop a deuce right infront of the gate.
sounds to me like 1560 is skewed to the younger crowd, 610 is the established big boy, and 790 is somewhere in the middle.
I will be honest. As someone who listens from another state all together most of the time I can't stand listening to anyone other than Matt Jackson for an extended period of time. Though that might be because the other ones know more about the football teams of Texas high schools than anything associated with the Rockets. 1560 makes me want to throw things and cry when I have to listen to them waiting for an interview. 790 has some decent talk and don't make me want to cry, but again, I don't want to hear them spend 5 minutes on basketball , when we have yet to lose a game in the entire month, and then have them move on to football in the middle of February. I listen whenever the stations get interviews with people associated with the Rockets (thanks to the heads up I get on here) or when some big news breaks... like say... a trade for Ron Artest. I will also be honest and say that even though I love the sports side, I would rather hear the personalities of the people being interviewed rather than the same old questions and answers over and over again. That's what was so fantastic about your show. I learned more about Ron Artest in that hour than I wanted to know. Especially about his bathroom habits! I also apologize to those at those radio stations that read this, but Carmichael asked and he's the only one who's talked to me personally in chat! (that I know of!) edit: Oh... and I never listen to that FM station, though I hear Calvin Murphy's show is a real hoot.
A thing to ponder is would a show predominately about basketball survive ratings wise with the rockets being the 3rd wheel in town? Would the consultation suits tell anyone who would try such a thing to talk more about football and baseball or risk getting axed?
So carmichael dave, about 2 months ago our office admin, a Spurs fan, decided to give everyone an NBA alias. My boss is Phil Jackson. We have a Lebron, Kobe, TMac, Pierece and Timmy. Yours truly is Ron Artest. As someone that knows the man, what does that say about me?
610 probably gets more listeners tho, especially since they broadcast all the Rockets and Texans games.
wow. I used to listen to Sports 1140 KHTK like all the time back during the C-Webb - White Chocolate era. Grant Napier. Brian Wheeler. Frank Wright. Best radio station I ever listened to. Dallas and Houston and LA stations couldn't hold a candle.
