It would end up costing us significantly more in taxes to go this route and we'd paying picks for the privilege.

What you are failing to consider is that we would have been stuck with a $28 million albatross contract had we signed Melo last year. His player efficiency rating tumbled last year, indicating poor play. High contract cost + poor play = a very bad combination. So my point stands in that I was 100% correct in not wanting Melo last year. Very simple, clean analysis.

    GOOD DAY

    Premium Post... pffft.

It was Premium alright, premium pile of horse sh**.

First off, the Thunder traded for him, he was not signed.
Second, he would take a one year MLE contract. Not 4 year $160 million as CP3 signed. How is this taking the Rockets on a "highway to hell".
Third, you can't be "100% correct as per usual" if he hasn't even signed a contract with us yet.
Fourth, he'll be paid his full contract once the Hawks buy him out. What we give him is just extra in his pocketbook.
Fifth, go somewhere with your old 80s rock lyrics not so cleverly laced in your post.

The best answer? Go back to whatever cave you crawled out of Jorgey and take the played out 80s rock with you to Spurs talk.

I don't really want Melo after his last season, but we really don't have much to lose here. We already lost a significant element of our defensive versatility which allowed us to compete with GS, so I'm pretty pessimistic about our defense this season.

Best case scenario is that Harden and CP3 elevate Melo's offensive game better than Westbrook (likely) and that Melo fully buys into our defensive scheme and plays his ass off on that end (not likely). Hopefully we can hide him on defense as much as possible and can use him on offense to create his own shot it spurts instead of missing 27 straight threes.

By premium, I think you mean yourself as a contributed member aka contribution in $$$.

Obviously, your post isn't premium or as I would call it a bandwagon level in this forum history.

Other people has cited the facts about Melo. I don't need to repeat them. We didn't get him via trade last season for a reason. His contract wasn't worth the trade assets we were willing to part. Hence why we didn't get him. Melo performance last season with OKC has no direct prediction on how he would of performed with us under CP3 and Harden passing skills. The only thing anyone can predict is his willingness to play under MDA.

Now, this season given that we lack some offensive power and playoffs showed us that we could really use another mid range shooter, Melo with MLE is not a bad idea.

He's definitely fit under Morey with value above contract theory. Worst case scenario, we cut him or bench him.

Why wouldn't anyone like to gamble on that odds???

Besides who to say CP3 couldn't knock any sense into Melo?

I don't agree that you are 100% correct in your analysis. Context matters. Melo was playing on a team with Russel Westbrook. That'll make anyone's player efficiency dip. Furthermore, it was his first year ever not being the primary option, so it's not surprising that he didn't excel right away. So in 20/20 hindsight with all things equal, absolutely, you are correct in not wanting him last year. But that's now this works. It's a guess either way, but I don't think he would have been nearly as ineffective as he was in OKC.

And if the Melo contract came with a simple switch of Anderson and him plus whatever small contract it took to match would have been okay with me even to this day, seeing as Anderson didn't provide much of anything from the second half of the season on and we ended up needing star power in Game 6 and 7 to beat GSW -- Melo could have helped.

Say what you want about OKC. But they have had a great off season. Being creative. And the ownership is SPENDING.

    Paul George re-signs
    Jerami Grant re-signs
    Ray Felton re-signs
    ADD Noel
    ADD Schroeder
    ADD TLC
    Move Melo off the books.

As a Rockets fan, from an OPTICS standpoint, tough to see that and contrast that with the LOSSES of Ariza and Moute.

I know Morey is still working, but just from those optics, it is annoying.

Schroeder isn't exactly a net positive, he still has 3 years left on his contract for 15 mil, and seems to be a locker room problem. I wouldn't be surprised OKC will try trading him again.

They claim to like him, but yeah, he hasn't been a very good player. However, coming off the bench he'd be a good guard to attack team's second team defenders.

People are mixed on Schoeder. But he could be a good 6th man for OKC. And you are right, Presti could end up flipping him again for an asset. But that kind of pisses me off. I wanted OKC to lose Melo for nothing, but Presti is still extracting value. Good for him and OKC fans.

Looking forward to Morey EXTRACTING VALUE out of good 'ole RYAN ANDERSON.

He also may be charged with a felony aggravated assault charge. So it's not just a locker room issue, he also comes with legal baggage.

That, to me, is an even bigger negative than his locker room issues.

Defense and shooting percentage are often the most overlooked areas for a casual fan in judging a player's performance. In truth, most casual fans just focus on points scored or highlights. Defense and shooting % are key contributors to a player efficiency rating. Melo scores very poorly on both of these metrics at this stage of his career, and the results are on a downward descent as he ages. Recall how the Rockets relentlessly ran pick and rolls using the man Melo was guarding as the screener. They wanted a Melo-on-Harden matchup because of Melo's poor defensive capabilities. This weakness was, and will be, further exploited. Melo's true shooting percentage plummeted to a career low point last season, barely surpassing the .500 mark. These valid concerns must be weighed. Team chemistry must also be weighed, given Melo's prima donna past.

actually it does. it gives you an idea of what kind of player you're getting. The numbers and %'s dont all of a sudden dramatically change. in many cases they dont even go up. people use the excuse of playing with harden/cp3 as if they're the ones putting the ball in the basket for him

I think it's more like OKC needed to eat Schroeder's contract (which is horrible in ATL's eyes) and give up a first rounder to shed Melo's contract. Don't forget they also had to give up assets in the first place to NY in the first trade.

    but yeah Presti is good.

While correct, you can not subject his numbers without considering the difference in style and players that he will be fitting with here in Houston.

The looks that would have been going to Ryan Anderson would now be freed up for Melo. His spot up shooting numbers have jumped exponentially when set next to a premium point guard, which we have two of, based on his numbers playing for the national team with our very own CP3.

Of course those numbers have to be taken with salt as they were against lesser competition with the loaded Olympics squad. But the same cannot be said when he was playing in Denver with the likes of Chauncey Billups.

It's easy to focus on the negatives when someone didn't succeed with X team, but you can't discount the fact that X team may just have not been a good fit and Y team may be a bit of a better fit.

All in all, he's not going to cost us 27.1 million dollars... so why is everyone still complaining if he'll outplay his contract of, at the most, quite possibly the MLE or, at the very least, the vet minimum....? This is what's baffling.

I don’t understand all the negativity around signing Melo. We’re getting him for pennies when we lost two players and there’s no other free agent on the market worth crap. It’s not like we’re paying him $15 million.

I was bummed to lose Ariza for the simple fact that we didn’t upgrade the position. We certainly weren’t about to pay him 15 million as a 34-year-old declining player they can’t shoot consistently, and didn’t hit one shot in 7th game of the NBA finals. Moute is injury prone and was never the same player after his last injury. Not to mention he missed a lot of games from his previous injury. So, what’s the big deal was signing a player for the minimum? There is literally no risk involved here. If he doesn’t work out, he doesn’t work out. No loss. But, considering the Rockets aren’t paying him anything and he can score off the bench, I’d say it’s a win-win situation .
