Carlos Correa to the Twins - 6 years, $200 million

Probably good for his health

 

Despite all of the free agent bluster, doctors were giving him the same prognosis they were giving the teams, and it really must not have been good.

Vesting options can be activated by the team even if the player fails to qualify, and his option vests on PA, which the team doesn't have to give if the player isn't playing well. For all practical purposes the Twins have 4 team options on his age 34-37 seasons, and they aren't even highly paid options. For him to agree to give away that much control of his career, one can't help but think doctors told him there's a very good chance of this becoming a major problem for you.

From a strictly financial perspective, agreeing to a shorter term deal without the unfriendly team options would have been a much smarter choice once the 10 year deals came off the table.

They likely told him there is a significant chance he's going to need another procedure on the leg over the next 6 years (when he's getting a high AAV). There aren't a lot of medical conditions that any doctor will predict will only be a problem in 7 or 9 years, etc... but certainly within 2-3 to 5 years.

At that point, the negotiated compromise is that he will get guaranteed big money to rehab in exchange for those years on the back end where he may not get to re-enter the market.

 

In a sense it seems like it's "betting on himself" from an availability standpoint, and betting against himself on the production side. $25, $20, $15, $10m over his age 35, 36, 37, and 38 seasons sounds like good money at those ages if he expects not to be able to produce big numbers at that point. I wonder how much that part of the contract is just face-saving in general by Boras, since it sounds like a bigger contract than it really is.

Still, 6 years, $200m, it's not chump change. Dude is an amazing SS and is getting paid like one.

 

Mets also wanted field time along with plate appearances

And we won a championship with Pena. It all worked out. No guarantee we win with Correa playing for us.
Pena got smoking hot at the right time.

 

May end up being the opposite if he ends up requiring another procedure on the leg short term. He'll play less for his big money years but may be able to play more at age 33-34.

 

A loss for CC but a win for baseball fans. These mega contracts paying guys big money in their late 30s are bad for teams and bad for the league.

 

The MLB season is from April to October. It doesn't get that cold yet during those months...

Not going to be a problem yet, his oldest is barely over 1, so there's 4 years before he starts worrying about that.

I wish you the best, but I'm still a bigger Dickie Thon fan. He played with effectively one eye for 4 years and always loved Houston. Houston still loves him.

I really like the structure of this deal. It is an incentive based player option AND a team option. This makes sense for every long term contract to me. Duel Options which is not to be confused with a mutual option.

 

Glad he’s not with the Mets. Don’t need to really worry about him in the playoffs for a while.

 

This is true, but it was the initial offer, do you really think they could not have negotiated something close to this deal?

And he has to play in Minny and not get the adulation he would here or even the big stage since he would be playing with a dynasty type of team.

He has to have a little regret at this point.

 

This I don't see anybody really holding a grudge against him just saying he would probably be in a better spot negotiating with the Astros instead of just bolting for the highest bidder.

 

That was the Astros' final offer. That was the big point of contention - they weren't really willing to move on their offer, so he ultimately moved on. He ended up signing with the Twins just before spring training, so there wasn't really any more time for him to wait.
