There’s no orthopedic or ankle specialist out there who would say “this may not last 8-10 years… but it should be fine for 3-5… etc.”

Either the ankle will likely break down or not. Once there’s enough question about it, all mega long term deals were going to be off the table. Correa could have the leg give out as soon as next year… or the year after… or 8 years. Teams had to decide how much guaranteed money they were willing to go up to first for this possibility… then divide that amongst years… then include non-guaranteed years with team options for the possibility that Correa may not play during the high AAV portion of his contract.

Hell, pretty much all doctors would agree that none of these players signing 10-12 year deals will be healthy/productive throughout…. Because short of using PED’s, players aren’t going to get bigger/faster/stronger as they age.

So last yr when Correa was a FA, before the leg issue arose, how many long term deals was Correa offered? DET possibly. If teams weren't concerned about his back how come he wasn't offered what Seager got?

How do we know other teams were willing to offer Seager what Seager got? The Mets and Giants weren’t in the SS market that late in the post lockout offseason. The Yankees and Dodgers were never serious about him due to their fan bases anger. Detroit offered him a long term deal but at a lower AAV. And yes, other teams may have wanted to see him stay healthy for another season, which he did.

The sale of MLB’s streaming media stake also infused a ton of cash for a lot of teams that helped spur more spending this off-season. Obviously this was the year to be a marquee FA vs. last year.

In the end, the Astros offer wasn’t close to being the best offer… pre leg “injury” as well as post leg “injury”.

I have never heard anything about medicals being a reason for the Astros offer, non offer, or terms of the offer

Can you please tell Mr where you heard this?

All I heard was a bunch of fans assuming it

Edit: Damn I meant to be out of this discussion!!

I agree. What I meant was the medical issues had nothing to do with that offer…. That offer was the most the Astros were willing to go in years and AAV regardless. I guess when re-reading it, I can see how it could be mis-interpreted.

Lux out for the season. I wonder if the Dodgers wish they would have made an offer to Correa now

They are pretty hellbent on resetting their luxury tax bill so they can go sign Ohtani to a 12/600 next offseason (or something like that).

They're over the tax right now though and they've said they don't plan on making trades to get under it. Granted, that could be all talk and they'll make a trade if it doesnt hurt their team too badly.

What are they obey, by like $12? When did that happen? Last I’d seen in January they were a couple M under, but I guess that’s changed?
If they don’t end up under the tax to reset it one time then quite frankly their off-season made no sense. Unless they are just lowering payroll going forward as winning 110 games isn’t doing anything more for them in the big picture than winning 95 games would do. That makes a certain amount of sense I guess but isn’t necessary for that brand in that market.

Moving Thor or JD Martinez gets them comfortably under. What an odd
Couple of signings that was in light of their LT deal. They must have just been shocked when the Bauer thing went against them.

In a bidding war between LADs and NYMs, The Mets have a huge advantage. An insane owner who is rich unlike the LADs who is insane and not so rich.

Correa has had bad luck so far this season, he will be fine.

The Twins will never realize any sort of return on this investment.

Correa has always been overhyped. His stats don't support it.

The problem with the deal is you feel compelled to hit him in a premium spot in the lineup when he's really a 6 hole hitter at best.

You can't pay 33 million for a 6 hole hitter.

Hell the Astros are having to deal with a $19.5 million hitter with the same problem.

The question is not why Correa wasn't offered what Seager got? It's why was Seager offered what Seager got?

So, Correa has a 200 babip. That’s probably really unlucky.
His OBP is like 80 points higher than his Ba and his iso is almost 200 points which is pretty good not great. with a 300 babip (league average) he’s probably like 280/360/480. Instead of 190/ 270/390.

I can buy some of the "oh he's just been unlucky", but what you just claimed is outrageous. The truth lies somewhere in between, but likely a lot closer to his actual real world numbers.

He got paid Lindor money but Lindor is producing (98R, 107RBI in 2022, and similar projections for 2023).

Correa will never produce like Lindor.
