If you look at WAR, it would actually be a very easy argument for Pena

It's hard trying to separate emotion from logic with Correa.

He has been a year away from the Astros. Did he see the light and realize its worth playing for less to be on a perennial contender vs a team that won't give him the bright lights?

Is he going to chase the big contract?

    Interesting off season.

Or I could see Pena hits worse, has less defensive capabilities a much weaker arm, and commits way more errors.

But... is this year's Correa playing 34 million dollars better than Pena?

Not sure what kind of long-term contract Correa thinks he'll get. His regular season offensive numbers have rarely been eye popping. He's had some great postseason moments and that helped him get the big salary for this season. He's probably past the injury concerns but now it's more about does he have elite offensive skills to warrant 10 years, 325m or more.

As a fan, I love Carlos Correa and wish he was a life long Astro and HOFer.

As a realistic fan with open eyes, I'm excited for the future of the team without him.

With Carlos on this team, could they have extended Alvarez? They would already be over the tax threshold and have basically zero room next season ( in case he does not opt out)

Would they have resigned Verlander if already committed to Correa? Neris? Would they have traded for players that added salary- Vazquez, Mancini, Dubon?

Having shortstop filled without worry at MLB minimum allows this team to have a deeper more balanced team and better chance to win.

Pena may never be Correa, but he is still good enough to not worry about the shortstop position and help prevent the team from becoming the Angels or Rangers.

Why do you think him picking bright lights instead of money is "seeing the light"?

People say this every year about players. People criticized Lindor for wanting $300MM. Laughed at Seager thinking he'd get $300MM. Etc. Yet every year, these players get those big contracts. Correa's mistake last year was waiting too long while other teams scooped up the other SS's. If he doesn't do that, he'll get his ginormous contract from somewhere. New teams are always popping up on the verge of contention and looking for a blockbuster signing - even moreso with playoff expansion giving more fanbases a taste of making the playoffs.

Yeah- I think Detroit offered him 10/275 and that was confirmed. It wasn’t unreasonable for him to think someone would go 10/300. He just lost that game of musical chairs.

Depends. He’s TBD in the place that matters with this Astros team which is the playoffs. Is he going to be the guy who was a quality AB for the first 3 months of the year or the guy that’s a black hole Auto out for the last 6 weeks or so. Because that’s what matters for this team.
Was nice to see him hit the ball hard yesterday after he’s been so bad for a long time. I think it’s the rookie wall, but it’s possible he has a hole that can’t be fixed. It wouldn’t be the first time.

A guy who excels in the playoffs goes to a team that probably wont make the playoffs. :(

Pena is easy to fix. Bat him in the 2 hole with Alvarez as protection. He will get a ton more fastballs. He’s played 30+ games there with an 860 ops, 7 hrs and a high batting average. Mancini comes in, hits 3 homers in five games and goes to the bench, because Yuli is warming up. What a laugh. Yuli had a good game two days in a row. Of course the two games before that he was sh*t. We need to get Mancini ready for the playoffs. We should be giving McCormick more run in Center Field. We won’t even get to the World Series if we don’t get better offensively. The answers have been given to Dusty, he just refuses to listen.

Carlos has more value this year than any other shortstop this year, and arguably last year.

For MLB purposes he will be the same age Seager was last year. Unless he gets hurt between now and the end of the season, 3 years in a row playing 80+% of the teams games.

Proven playoff leader and performer with a platinum glove at the most difficult and important defensive position.

Over 36 bWAR and .829 OPS through his age 27 season.

3 seasons removed from any major injury concern.

2021 Seager: - age 27 21.3 bWAR and .870 OPS, proven playoff performer but average only defense and career .870 OPS. Coming off injuries causing at least 65 games lost in 2021 and also nearly all the season in 2018.

    He got 10 yrs and $325 M

Now you can say it's the Rangers, but how can a team like the Orioles, Phillies, or Tigers not go at least:

    9 yrs and $297M ( $33 per)

That gives him 10 /$332 including this year. More than Seager.

Their organization and fans would be completely stoked.

    Let's see:

    27 Correa 375 PA; 2.6 WAR; 0.7 dWAR; 26 RAR; $35.1M
    24 Pena 373 PA; 3.6 WAR; 1.8 dWAR; 35 RAR; $700K

    It's not close this year.

What is that statement based on?

    Arguably, Pena has outperformed Correa.

At this point, I don't even think you need to add "arguably". It's pretty open and shut.

    I apologize for being unclear.

I was ONLY referring to shortstops that will be available in the free agent market 2021 and 2022.

I feel looking at all of them, Correa 2022 is the most valuable.

He has not had a great season, but there is still time and he has been quite good.

He is another year removed from Injuries, the scandal, and has shown the ability to perform in a new environment.

It does not need to happen but if he has a good post season and leads the Twins to a series win or two - watch out.
