Would also reduce the pressure to make a trade at the deadline which has proven difficult

Correa wasn't OK with our offer last season, an offer we made before we paid Yordan, found a capable replacement, coming off an excellent season for him, and with fan pressure. Unless he has an extremely strong finish to the season, I don't think he's opting out. Even if he did opt out, there's very, very slim reason to think we would pay him more than others this offseason after we wouldn't last offseason.

Pena is in an ugly stretch, but he still looks like a rock solid 3 WAR, team controlled player, with potential to still be really good offensively long term. SS simply isn't an area the Astros are gonna throw resources at right now. The far more pragmatic choice to address our offense is to address LF or 1B, two positions that are extremely easy to find offense.

Correa is likely to get $200M; for that money Houston can easily resign both Verlander and Mancini, 2 players who address much bigger needs.

Correa is NOT coming back here because that ship has sailed. He's not worth 35 mil nor is he worth 20-25 mil when you have a WAY cheaper option with Pena.

    LAD will resign Turner.
BOS more then likely Xander and if not Story slides over to SS.
Do not see the NYY going that route with what they have in house.

Could a team like BAL or DET or possibly PHIL make a bid for him absolutely. He's not worth to the Stros what he's seeking. I just don't see a team going north of 6/180. I get he's been healthy this yr which helps his cause but no way I would give him anything above 5/125. He's just not that player in my humble opinion.

Stros have WAY more important areas to use that $$.

There's always the wild card of the NYM.

I have always liked Correa and am thankful for his time and results in Houston.

That said he simply does not fit anymore.

    1) Pena is not what he showed to start the season, but he is a legitimate above average young cheap controllable starting MLB shortstop.

    2) The team has many position holes to fill this offseason ( 1B, LF, b/u C, #1 bench, and possibly CF) and neither Correa nor Pena fit any of those spots.

    3) The money he would command would all but guarantee young players like Tucker, Framber, Javier, Garcia, and Urquidy are much less likely to fit into the budget as they become FA or even later arbitration years expensive.

    4) His potential salary would likely make it impossible to also resign Verlander

Let's just thank Carlos for his service and move on.

    Pena 3.4 WAR; 1.8 dWAR; 369 PA; $700K/yr
    Correa 2.6 WAR; 0.7 dWAR; 371 PA; $35.1M/yr

Not to mention that Pena's team is going to the playoffs. Carlos's team probably isn't.

I understand but never underestimate these guys (potentially move him to 3rd)?

The twins have a good shot at making the postseason. They're one of the top 6 teams in the AL imo

He'll opt out thinking he's going to get AAV of the 35 mil and I don't see him getting it. Wonder if MINN puts the 35 mil back on the table again with the opt out after one yr? As I said he's stayed healthy but there is NO way he's a 30+ million a yr player in my opinion.

His numbers (.767 OPS) in Minny so far don't justify anything anywhere near his salary.
At this point, it looks like one of the best decisions Click has made is NOT resigning Correa.
WTF would we want him and his bloated salary back?

Astros need to be focused on extending one (or all) of the following players: Valdez, JV, Tucker

Is he arrogant enough to exercise his opt out?
