Actually, I just asked her and she said there's one on 45 South between 610 and I-10 for $1900. She's not in the office, so she doesn't have all the details, though.
I looked into doing billboards for my wife's business, and they are indeed expense. But not quite $8K. You can get one through Clear Channel off I-10 in the memorial area for around $6,000 a mo. 290 and 1960 (busy area), around $4,500 a mo. There are some good deals out on 249 between Willowbrook and Tomball for only $500 a mo. If you can somehow convince Clear Channel that this is a non proft thing, you can probably get it for free. The problem is, I think there is a minimum 3 month commitment on most billboards. The artwork and the printing of the vinly cost about $500.
You know...three months would almost cover the signing period for Beltran. The very nanosecond that board went up, the news media would be ALL over it. It would make an impression to be sure. Not certain if it would be enough.
Send him a StrippoGram. Cheaper than a billboard and probably more effective. I mean, what would you pay attention to? A big sign, or a partially nekkid woman?
we need to go all out like we did for roger.. make beltran feel really loved... have radio stations offering him things to stay etc.. I know all of us aren't big matress mac fans.. but I wonder if he'd allow one of the ones he puts gallery furniture stuff on to be used for beltran.. since he is a big astros fan and it would get him publicity
how much are those planes that fly over with signs... should have one of t hose flying over minute maid
One overlooked, but extremely important, reason to re-sign Carlos: For an owner, there's probably no greater thrill in baseball than sticking it to Steinbrenner.
If you're at any of these home games, you need to start a "Stay Carlos, Stay!" chant. In 1997, the last two UT games were full of chants urging Ricky to stay. I'd like to think that's why he did.
you know.. as much as I think it's a cool idea.. after I think about it... I just can't see justifying spending 8,000 dollars to talk someone into taking millions of dollars payment for playing a game... we should donate 8k to charity instead
One thing i heard on 610 that was good news is that Carlos is not a big market type of guy. He was in Kansas City and now Houston, and reportidly he likes Houston right now. So we might have a bit of an edge to sign him this off season. They also said that he might be switching agents and looking to sign with a team that he is comfortable with and not really looking for only money as everyone is speculating. Hopefully that will help us in our effort to keep him.
Bingo! C'mon 1900 bucks ain't bad at all... yeah we'd still have to pay for the artwork and such but this would be completely worth it. We need to generate a buzz in Houston like what was done with Clemens. Get the radio stations talking about it and a billboard ad would definitely get the attention of the local media and most likely the national media. C'mon wouldn't it be great to see our billboard on the opening segment of sportscenter?
We need probably about 25 bucks out of 100 people..., to cover the cost of the artwork too. The more people we could get to join...the less the cost per person would be. Like I said, I'd be down for donating anywhere from 20-30 bucks...just as long as it's after monday when the collection is done
Not to take anything away from you guys, but i think the Astros P.R. department should be putting up the billboards. They've seen how much Houston has embraced Beltran. If they don't resign him, they need to at least make it look like they did everything in their effort to do so (AKA, Randy Johnson.)
I give Drayton permission to raise ticket prices for the upcoming seasons on behalf of the fans. The Astros are a hot ticket and Beltran is a keeper.
