This is really ruining the 84 draft documentary for me, where they spent 30 minutes on Carlisle and 2 minutes on Dream.
And, if the analogy holds true, how did Carlisle ruin Dirk and maybe more appropriate...Luca? Was that ruined Luca putting up those numbers against the Clippers? Good grief, how good would he be if he weren't ruined?? That said, he does have a rep for not playing younger players. That just doesn't apply to really good, if not great, young players. It's also one of the reason why Indy might be a really good fit for him. He's very good at taking what players can do, and making that their role...and also at explaining their role, and what they need to do to succeed in it.
Dirk was pretty much done as a top-10 player after that season, actually. Like you said, Carlisle (as well as Van Gundy, Dantoni, and others) don't like playing young players. I mean, Luka is so good that it would take a monumental effort to mess that up. I get that you like Carlisle as a coach. I think the guy is extremely overrated and has not accomplished much at all since the 2011 championship. I agree with you that the Pacers are probably the best fit for him because their fan base is happy with 45-50 wins a year. Dallas fans were not, and once they looked at the record and realized that Carlisle had done nothing in 12 years, they checked out. And not just fans, but players.

people management is hard. just because it doesn't work work-wise, you still gotta treat everybody with respect. you can tell them it's not working but you can't belittle or disrespect anybody
