On the other hand, we still live most of our lives in a Newtonian universe... in that sweet spot where things aren't too big or too small. The knowledge of the vast expanse of the universe and the ridiculously tiny subatomic has little effect on our everyday lives except to remind us of what is really important. In a sense, we are at the center of the universe, that one little piece of the big-small continuum where sentient beings can exist, the garden. If you look at it that way, then what we do can matter and of course, I believe we can affect the present and the future and I knew that with certainty the day my first child was born.

It's easy to eat the apple and give in to existentialist despair, but you can also eat the apple and use that knowledge to reaffirm your humanity. It's your choice.

I would not describe my viewpoint as "existential despair" at all. As you'll notice, I said that nothing matters except for in the here and now. That gives great importance to my life, despite the my acceptance that my conscious existence means nothing to the universe in an objective sense.

Just ran across this old video, thought I'd bump this thread. Sagan was one of the best ever.

While I greatly admire Sagan, gotta mention his successor. Neil deGrasse Tyson. In no way does he rival Carl Sagan, but he's great as well.
