    Oh my god... Carl Landry...

I don't care if we go on a losing streak and drop a few spots, you should never care more about a sports team than someone's life.

The shooting occurred about 2:30 a.m., a few hours after the Rockets returned from a game at New Orleans. Landry drove home after the team arrived about 12:30 a.m.

Houston police spokesman Kese Smith said Landry was driving his sport utility vehicle southbound on a city street, when a northbound car swerved into his path and collided with his vehicle. Landry and the driver of the other vehicle made U-turns and the vehicles collided again and Landry's SUV hit a utility pole.

Smith said Landry got out of his SUV to inspect the damage, and was shot by one of the two occupants of the car. The suspects then fled the scene.

Smith originally said the incident occurred about 4 a.m., but said later that was the time authorities were notified. Smith did not know if Landry was the person who called police.

Turns out it was actually at 2:30AM...

Very worrisome to say the least. Dislocated a finger in his left hand too, lucky that the girl with him didn't get hurt.

You're right, once they ban guns or make them more difficult to obtain, then there would be less crime..... Then the "small time criminals" would have to resort to knife muggings and what not. Maybe we should make knives harder to obtain also, that way criminals would really be at their wit's end as to how to maintain their lifestyle.

Criminals, reputed and petty, have one thing in common: They are immune to laws and regulations. Where there is a will, there most certainly is a way, esp. for criminals. Thank god we have the NRA and a powerful pro-gun lobby and uummmm what's that list called?....OH YEAH!!! The Bill of Rights (2nd Amendment to be specific) written into the Constitution.

On another note, you say police would feel safer? A friend of mine (i know sounds cliche) asked a cop acquaintance when he first obtained his CHL about cops' opinions civilians carrying concealed. The Cop told him that overall, it is a peace of mind for the police officers knowing that there are law abiding citizens on their side to help promote peace. But i digress...

I don't think banning guns would decrease anything at all.. What we need are tougher laws against illegal immigrants and the sick minded... Diagnose these sickos at an early age..

    I'm just glad Carl's okay.

Unfortunately, this has become a recurring part of life in the big cities in this country. Sean Taylor of the Redskins was shot in his home in Miami (and later died). Darrent Williams (of the Broncos) was shot in a limo in Denver (and later died). Javon Walker was assaulted outside a club in the Bay Area (luckily survived).

    And so on.

Hope HPD catches the peeps involved. I hope Carl was able to give them a license plate number.

Unfortunately, if they catch them, they'll probably get a light sentence since he was only hit in the leg.

...and yes, this does let you understand the paranoia that goes along with being an athlete, knowing that you could be a target at any moment.

    from Battier....

We received some disturbing news this morning. After a great win against New Orleans in New Orleans, we returned home late last night. While our power forward Carl Landry was coming home from the airport, his car was shot at by two armed men. Thankfully, Carl only suffered a flesh wound in his calf and a dislocated finger. The outcome of the shooting could have been much, much worse. I am thankful and relieved that Carl has been released from the hospital already.

Carl is one of the nicest people I know, he is just a good person. It is senseless that someone would try to shoot him. Carl was only trying to get something to eat after our plane ride. I don't know all of the details yet, but it will be good to see Carl.

People ask me if this brings a sense of perspective to me. I try not to get caught up in our job as basketball players. Ultimately, things like health, family, and friends are much more important than the games that we win or lose. I don't need an episode like this morning's situation to remind me of that. With that said though, I will give my wife and my son an extra hug and kiss before I go to the gym today. Now that's what's important to me.

    Talk to you soon,

    Shane
