Outside of redicoulous things that I could never be in a million years (playboy, movie star, rock star, pro athlete, etc.) I would like to be a sports or talent agent, but I don't think I have the personality/temperment for it. I am not really much of a people person, and really not an alpha male, type A personality type. I am looking at law school though, so I am keeping the dream alive.

    GOOD CALL :D

I think I'd most like to be a theoretical physicist. String theory, special relativity, and other such things occupy a large amount of my thinking as it is.

sure thing, but its not easy work to be a comic artist, deadlines are killer and some of the industry greats can take years of really fine tuning and personalizing their style before they hit their stride, quesada, billy tan, frank cho, skottie young, come to mind. Even frank miller himself took some time before he got consistent. Its a very competitive field, a lot of it is finding your own style and then having an audience that likes it and wants more.

First being an architect isn't as cool as it sounds and I make it my duty to warn the unwary. We call it "architorture" for a reason. If you don't mind long hours, little sleep, frequent periods of hi-stress and frustration on top of getting paid significantly lower than other professions even though you spend about the same time getting educated then architecture is for you. If not then you might want to consider something else. That said for me I'm too old and too set to start another career path. I'm less bothered by my career than the type of projects and clients that I work for.

I've also had the chance to do a lot of different things within the architecture and urban design field and without. So while I've done a lot of the typical stuff of putting together drawings, writing specs and etc.. I've also done things like web design, programming and public policy. I've also done some writing and have had a essays published in addition to academic papers. With martial arts I've had the chance to compete professionally and work out with world class athletes along with training cops and soldiers along with teach self-defense to regular people. Finally playing in a band doing paying gigs I've gotten to try my hand at music and see what it takes to be a professional musician.

I think I've been fortunate to try a lot of different things and I'm not someone who feels comfortable settling down to do the same thing over and over again. The one drawback though is that I haven't earned much money and I've turned down lucrative opportunities to try my hand at doing other things. Quality of life though is more than just about money so its always a challenge to balance what you love with what you have to do to make a living. If you can do both then you're lucky.

Other than replace Ron Wood as the Rolling Stones 2nd guitarist?

I would cover the Astros for the Houston Chronicle.

Another thought on living your dream job. Like anyone who's picked up a guitar I've thought about what it would be like to be a rock star but the more I think about it I'm not sure it would be for me.

Here's a piece I wrote about that for my blog.

I could be a star in Glasgow

I was at an Irish bar this past weekend and asked the band if they knew any rebel tunes. They said they knew a few and asked them if they knew "Boys of the Old Brigade." Since they didn't and its one that the Serfs do I started singing it. As I did an old drunk Scot joined me and told me that I should go to Glasgow where I would be a huge star. A Serfs tour of Scotland certainly sounds appealing but I don't think I'm ready to start booking tour dates.

Being a musician I've often dreamed about being a Rock star. Sure the money, adulation and hot groupies would be great but when I seriously think about it I'm not sure I'm really cut out to be a Rock Star. For one I look terrible in spandex and mascara but I really don't think I would enjoy paparazzi prying into my life. I couldn't imagine the horror of waking up and seeing a picture of me picking my nose splashed on the pages of the Enquirer. At the sametime though while I love playing music and playing live its one thing doing it for fun, beer and a few bucks every now and then but would it still be fun though spending hours in the studio on take 50 of "? on My Thigh" or playing 4 shows a night rushing to get from the Worcester Centrum to play Foxwoods Casino the next night? On the plus side I think I could handle the debauchery. Being in my 30's I think I've learned my limits and wouldn't be partying non-stop or completely debasing myself.

Of course though if one of the Serfs songs were to become a hit I wouldn't turn down the opportunity for riches, fame and hot groupies. I just don't think I would become a big star. I figure we would more than likely be one of those one hit wonders the kind that the radio really overplays, "Next on Generic 97 The Serfs every hour!" and people end up hating in a month until they end up on some VH-1 retro show. Or else I would end up being tagged as one of those "reclusive" artists that some think are great genius but really are misanthropic cranks.

Perhaps one of the oddest things that I would worry about getting famous would be that I would never be taken seriously again. Sure its true that Rock Stars like Bono embrace all sorts of important causes but honestly I don't think many people take them very seriously. Bono's social consciousness is almost a running joke easily mocked. So while being a pop icon might be a serious thing to those desparate to win American Idol it seems like a two edge sword to me. While yes I would have the name recognition to help advance causes and ideas but I would still always be thought of as the guy who wrote 'Chutneys Indian Buffet.'

Of course though this is all just idle daydreaming. It would be a great thing to consider how serious people take me if I actually was a big star but alas the Serfs fame only extends to a handful of drunks at various Irish bars and as for hot groupies outside of late night dreams the closest we've got is a couple of drunk dudes spastically flopping around.
