How come they didn't just combine their powers and summon Captain Planet after the problem is established 5 minutes in? It would have saved 20 minutes of watching each episode since he had superhuman powers and abilities.

An Inconvient Essay About Captain Planet.

Growing up in the ’80s, I was a dedicated child to many, many animated television series. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jem, Transformers, GI Joe; all were great, and all fascinated children nationwide. Weekdays, after school, we’d merrily run home to toss our backpacks/homework aside and sit in front of the boob tube to catch up on what we missed; or if we were lucky, our Saturday mornings would be filled with hours of glorious television and breakfast cereal that set standards for years to come.

Looking back on animation in the ’80s, we sometimes scoff and turn our heads, then ring in the future of present-day animated t.v. shows. But, one classic show that still gains attention and garners constant criticism is Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

Co-created by Ted Turner, the show was actually, to be fair, extremely ahead of its time. Global Warming has been a persistent problem in recent years; with Al Gore being a forceful speaker of the issue (hence the title). Of course, no one particularly cares about that fact, and just look to the freaky enemies, humorous plotlines, green mullet Captain, and love yelling “the Power is yours.”

Gaia (Mother Earth), voiced by Whoopi Goldberg (who better?), needed a hero, and brought together five Planeteers to combine their power to create Captain Planet. Kwami (Earth) from Africa, Wheeler (Fire) from the U.S.A., Linka (Wind) from Russia, Gi (Water) from Asia, and Ma-Ti (Heart) from South America were able to join forces and bring us the greatest hero of our time. The only problem with that, is the mockery that came with it.

Wheeler was simply the coolest and most badass of the group; not because he was from America, but because he could control fire, and as we all know, fire is one of the coolest elements. Kwami was equally awesome, because he could bend earth — wait, that’s Avatar. My bad. Linka and Gi were okay at best, mainly because they’re the lesser two of the four primary elements, but they never received as much jokes, insults, and criticism as Ma-Ti did. What exactly did he do? Heart? What kind of elemental power is that? And what was up with his monkey, Suchi?

Scoff and kid all you want, but here comes the biggest shocker of your lives, or of today. Ma-Ti was by far the most important Planeteer.

Being the youngest, at a ripe age of 12, Ma-Ti was the son of the leader of the South American Kayapo Indians. His parents died, and from that experience he grew stronger. He lived with his shaman grandfather in the forest. Ma-Ti freed Suchi, later to become his pet monkey, from a trap in the forest one day. He then gained the “Heart” power from the ring given to him for his courage and compassion for the animal. Ma-Ti is not a simpleton and not to be made fun of. Without him, the Planeteers would be nothing.

Ma-Ti’s heart and strength is what helped bond the Planeteers together for the two years the show ran, and would complete the five pieces needed for our great hero. Without Ma-Ti, our Planeteers would be lost. It was because of his dedication to keep the spirits of all Planeteers that helped to keep Captain Planet running. Without Ma-Ti and his “heart,” Kwami, Wheeler, Linka and Gi would have been lost in a world of despair, and would have given up into the hands of the maniacal super-villains (such as Looten Plunder — classic name!). Because of Ma-Ti’s heart, he was able to keep the group together until the fateful end in 1992 when the show was axed.

And the rest, they say, is history.

Post Script: Oh, and apparently the Fifth Element is Love, not Heart.
