To be honest, it's a good move. Not because of the Captain America name, but few people know what the Avengers are (at least in my experience overseas). I mean, to begin with mangas >>>>> comics in East Asia already, and if you want (as Marvel does) to have an entire series of movies based on the Avengers, then it's better to introduce the concept of the Avengers early on, like in the film title.

Exactly what I wanted to say when I saw this thread title. Thank god in heaven that in most corners of the world, our nation will be distanced a bit from this piece of crap movie!

I could buy the argument that Hollywood has no backbone when they produce movies like Yogi Bear, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Garfield and Smurfs instead of taking real risks.

But changing a name for overseas distribution is nothing new. It's about marketing. Same thing happened with Harry Potter. The first book was released as the Philosopher's Stone in England, but got changed to Sorcerer's Stone I think pretty much everywhere else.

And not to belabor this strange nationalistic notion from the OP, but "America" doesn't mean "United States" to everyone overseas.

So, to be really proud and to communicate that pride, we would have to change the (insipid) movie title to CAPTAIN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, PUT THAT ON YER MARQUE OR HOWEVER YOU FOREIGNERS SPELL YER SIGNS HAHA!

Yes it was, in the US it was called the Sorceror's Stone. The UK was the Philosopher's stone. The UK has no back bone for not standing up for it's philosophers!

They were scared to death with Inglorious Bastards, Saving Private Ryan, Flags of our Fathers, several HBO series, etc.

There are plenty of patriotic feel good about America movies out there.

I wouldn't call those "feel good about america" movies (never seen flags of our fathers). In that I mean I don't leave the theater thinking America is great, usually with war films the movie tries to show me how ugly war is.

    I can't think of many.

The character is dressed in a big American flag. I think the audience will know what "Captain America" is referring to.

tallanvor, you are mad that there are two different posters for the same underlying individual movie

    Very ironic.

How is that poli-sci doctorate coming along?

Avoid seeing a movie if you don't like it, it's not your style, the acting sucks, etc. Don't avoid a movie because of a title change. What a horrible reason.

No, it was changed to accommodate the US market (kids) - whom the Studio felt would NOT be excited about seeing a movie with "philosopher" in its title. Again, it's about markets. And if any British people boycotted the movie because of the bastardized title, then... well, they're idiots.

I think you're getting upset over nothing.

How ironic and hypocritical. How about YOU get a backbone and do what's legal? You won't give your money to the movie because of a different title, but you're all fine to DOWNLOAD it illegally? If you're that adamantly against it, why even watch it at all?

Time to bust out my huge rolleyes again

It is not the fact that they change the title thats insults me. It is why they changed the title. If you change philosopher to sorcerer in a title to accommodate kids, that's fine by me. If you take America out of a title to accommodate anti-Americans, it is not okay with me.

So you are up in arms about something that you weren't even a fan of in the first place. Talk about T-shirt patriotism. You weren't even patriotic enough to read Cap and don't even know much about him except that he wears Stars and Stripes and now your patriotic ire is all worked up.

This is what Cap would say to you.
