I hope the added weight is a good thing; seeing Clint getting pushed around last year was unfortunate.
Agree. He was pushed around. The Rockets need someone to rebound, and it's less about jumping than it is about holding your position. So I hope these 12 pounds help him physically, mentally, and add some intimidation and relentlessness.
212 was what...18 years old? for a near 7 ft man? wire thin and lots of people complained about his lack of sand in the pants. i believe he weight nearly 240 last year and people still demanded more weight like it wouldn't come naturally or like they couldn't remember the toll it took on yao's feet. 250 is as bulky as the kid needs to go. frankly i hope training camp sheds a couple pounds. his game is not strength. it's length and athleticism. he needs to work on a turn around 12 footer more than the bench press.
I like Capela and hopeful his sessions with Dream payoff this season. I need to see how his free throw shooting is going 1st though.
250 is great size for a guy nearly 7ft tall. He's still going to be outweighed by most of the starting centers in the NBA. I expect by his age 25 season he'll be 265-270 and that's were he should prob top out at. To be great you have to have the size and athletism it can't be one or the other. So this is clints chance to be great if he can't handle the weight and still have that same movement, well he never was going to be more than a 10-15 min a game bench player. This is a big year for him lets see if MDA and harden can make this kid a house hold name.
I'd be worried about his athleticism taking a hit.....bigs tend to focus too much on benching and shoulder presses...i already see some internal rotation starting to creep in on his arms/shoulders...shoulders are a little higher too..
Does no one watch the actual interview videos by Clutch? Capela is directly asked what he benches now, and his says he doesn't know because his trainer doesn't have him bench. Feel free to Like this post for watching the vid for you and summarizing key points for your lazy ass.
point taken lol...but its not just benching...it could come from any emphasis on pushing movements and/or working on the chest/shoulders. I only mentioned benching and pressing because it's the most popular. It could also come from shooting....i imagine he's been focusing on that a lot, maybe too much..body has to adjust to the new stimulus. Edit-watched the video..but doesn't he say he hasnt benched in the last days only?
Truth is, his athleticism diminished last season for whatever reason. Maybe he lost his legs with all the minutes. I don't know. But he played below the rim. His offensive game became horizontal instead of vertical. As evidenced by all the missed layups he should have been dunking. The added size and weight, and hopefully muscle will give him more stamina and lift when it is required, and give him the strength to bully on the boards and finish the season. He never had a shot, so that won't be effected. He can work on that later.
He will bc he's young- a baby. This is a good evolution for him. Once he's up in age he can drop weight to counter Father Time's effect on speed and joints.
I'm really excited about Capela's potential. One of my huge concerns with him was bulking up, and if he does that, I think he can be a force for this offense. Has the potential to be the prototypical new era center. Even if he is still a little raw, Nene is a really solid backup.
Capela does not have the stamina to fly up and down the court to keep up with the back and forth action of Harden. You could see this last season when he was in there. He'd run the first two or three possessions. Then after that he was loping behind the play, dragging up over half court and many times not even making it down to the lane before we were putting up a shot. He did not have the stamina to run the court last year. Now he's bulked up even more. You can bet his stamina is even lower this season. Oh, but those dunks he throws down will be with a lot more force. We've already butchered Capela's development by going down the same road with him that we went down with Terrence. Instead of emphasising his athleticism and speed by adding basketball skills to him, we've instead bulked him up to make a power player out of him in an era where power players are diminished and on a team with a coach who emphasizes skills even more than most. As was the case with Terrence, we should have been teaching Capela to shoot over the last two years and forgone trying to add bulk in favor of quickness and speed enhancement techniques. We're succeeding in turning Capela into just another big in a sea of bigs with similar bulk and length. And he still has the same Achilles heal at the free throw line that makes him useless in crunch time. Nanu what's his name will wind up being more effective than him with just a little experience. And I'm not high on Nanu becoming anything more than a decent backup 5. But at least he can knock down some free throws. We need to trade Capela before his trade value totally craters.
This interview makes me confident. Sure, it's Capela's own words but you can tell this guy is rather mature and a class act. I also agrees with others that 250 seems pretty reasonable for someone his height.
