The problem I see is the Rockets told everybody that they'd match any offer, then told Capela to sign an offer sheet with someone else so they can do that. Guess what, no team wants to sign him because the Rockets would match anyway, and to have that cap hold for 3 days before doing so.

Best way to handle this is to tell Capela, look here is what I think others would pay you- 3-4 years at $14-$16 mil if you were a free agent. We will give you 4 years at $17 mil to stay.

Remember De'Andre signed a 1 year deal at $24 mil, not a long term. If Houston wanted more negotiating power then offer Capeal $10 mil this year and they will revisit for a longer term later.

I imagine he ends up signing a 1 and 1 deal

was really hoping he would be signed by now.

why are people being cheap. hes one of the best centers of the game, and outplayed rudy gobert in the playoffs who makes 4/102M. he should be at least offered 4/80M+ if not gobert money. If rox dont get a longer term deal and capela becomes sour and walks after a year, they will regret it. The guy has put in the work, and has produced on the court, stayed out of trouble. Not to mention he is the perfect center for our already 2 supermax studs. He is due his $$. I understand they are trying to cut costs with lux tax, cap hits etc.

    just my 2 cents.

I’m not sure I like the outplayed so and so in the matchup analysis.

The more relevant thing would be... who would you prefer - Gobert or Capela.

I’m not sure if the answer especially on this team but just pointing out the importance of role and team and teammates.

Then of course different years = different markets. This is probably especially true for a center like Capela.

An ok potential market for him turned to crap when Phoenix, Dallas and Sacramento all grabbed bigs.

I’ve never really felt from DM that he’s lowballed people. I’m sure it’s happened but not a common thing.

So it’s up to Capela whether he wants to bet on himself again or not.

I’ve seen some mention of like a $10 million one year deal or a one and one type thing. Not sure what the purpose of that is? He’ll be a UFA either way. Give him more than the QO just to get goodwill??

    Yes

But he also becomes a true free agent, in a year the cap spikes. If he takes the QO and has a good season he is gone.

Why, we don't run a charity.

He is certainly worth much more than some of the ridiculous 12 million type deals people are suggesting, but there is zero reason we should offer that much money to a restricted free agent without a market. We should use that leverage to get him to take less money.

Portland's Nurkic RFA situation was interesting. Apparently (from a Woj article) the Blazers offered Nurk a contract that was MORE than he eventually accepted with 4/48 (4th year partial guarantee). Nurk turned it down and played the market. The market was rough and he came back and accepted the lesser offer. Clearly Nurk did not want to take the QO and try his luck next summer. That speaks volumes.

Ya know, with Capela, he may think that next summer will be better.....but will it? There are A LOT of players taking 1 year deals. While there will be more money and more teams with room, there will also be a larger SUPPLY.

Now, how do teams allocate their resources with that cap room? Capela is a NICHE player. Many teams might allocate their resources to go after wings or combo forwards. The money could dry up WAY FASTER than Capela could imagine.

Capela takes a big risk in taking the QO. Look at Noel. Nurk took his deal.

If the Rockets are offering 4/60 or 4/68, perhaps Capela should take it. All of this MAX talk was a bit presumptuous.

I think 4/68 is probably a realistic type offer that might be enough to make him cave.

Some of the suggested offers are downright insulting, but that may be close enough to his realistic earning potential that's it's worth foregoing the risk of playing a dangerous QO season for chump change.

    Mavs offered Noel 4/72.

4/68 gets Capela at 17M/per. That looks like the market right now.

Clint Capela is much better than Nerlens Noel, the fact that Noel was offered that suggests Clint is worth 20 million at least.

It is not about being better. It is about what the market will bare.

Yes, and the market for him will certainly bare better than 17 million, of that I have no doubts. The market for Noel didn't dry up unexpectedly, it dried up because he sucked. Rudy Gobert, Whiteside and Adams just signed a 100 million dollar extensions. Deandre Jordan is just coming off 3 years 63 million

But how much better I'm not sure, and he will be taking a huge risk taking a one year QO. That's how we may get him to cave to a 17 million type deal, but that will not be market value in 2019 when half the league will have 20 million to spend.

And half the league will be available to soak up that money. As much as we talk about teams having cap room in 2019 and the cap going up slightly, there is also a BIG SUPPLY of players waiting to take that money.

That was last year, though. Things change. Nurkic's contract establishes the market for non-All-Star starting centers.

If I'm Murray, I offer $60M/4 years, all guaranteed. If he wants more, I'd go $68M/4, but with the final year being a team option.

Time to force Clint's hand. He can leave $10M-12M guaranteed on that table by taking that QO, but there's no assurance he'll make it up as a FA next year. Injuries, a bad season, whatever. He'd be stupid not to take $15M a year right now. At the end of a 4-year contract, he'll be 28 and in his prime and ready for the REALLY big contract.

One thing that works against Capela right now is that in the Warrior's era, he's not as big of a difference maker when you're chasing a team of 4-5 all stars. But in the event the Warriors have to break up due to lux tax/contract decisions in 2 years, we're going to regret not having Capela on a long term deal/ having a favourable equation with him. Plus Capela fits in our system, coaching- he's likely to thrive/ improve going forward. He's young but MDA loves him (and that's rare)

Right now Harden/Capela are the surest thing to bank on for the forseeable future. The key is to get him to a contract that he's happy with but tradable at the same time.

Agreed. It's certainly a risk. You know that Noel wishes he'd have taken that 4 yr/ $70m deal that he turned down.

The max talk was the typical armchair gm stuff. Capela fits our system really well. We already have him so it just makes sense to keep him but at a price that makes sense.

On the open market, I don't see Capela being a max guy. He certainly has value, but he's not elite defensively and offensively, he's totally reliant on teammates to set him up for easy baskets.

He's a perfect fit for what we do but in a more traditional offense, he wouldn't be early as valuable. Typically, teams don't give max deals to those kind of players but all it takes is one person to overpay for him.

I guess it will come down to what his people are telling him the market will be next summer. Of course. I wonder what they told him to expect this summer.

I think his people were listening to the "armchair GMs" with the MAX term thrown around.
