Funny, I don't see the word "cancer" before the phrase "mortality rates" on your previous post. Feel free to edit it in so I look silly.

If you're trying to make a statement about Universal Healthcare being bad, you should really look at overall mortality rates instead, eh? Of course the US has the best success rate against cancer; we have the most money devoted to research.

Yeah, when I saw that, I had to check what country this happened in. Can't imagine someone doing that in the States -- it'd be downright irresponsible here.

She's in her 70's. She has a much more socialist healthcare plan than is available in Canada.

Oh my bad. I didn't realize you were not very bright.

    You see in this sentance

It means those people, the people that are the subject of the thread, the people with cancer.

I can see how you missed it.

There is practically no difference in cancer mortality rates between the US and Canada over the past 50 years. Please see the graph halfway down the link below:

    http://www.conferenceboard.ca/hcp/details/health/mortality-cancer.aspx

The bulk of the recent decline in cancer mortality in the US is attributable to reduction in tobacco use (Cutler 2008). Lung cancer remains a relatively large killer in Canada, which likely explains the additional 10 deaths per 100,000. That is purely speculative.

In any case, it would be irresponsible to use this as evidence for/against the American/Canadian health care system.

    You gotta love Canadians.

Good luck to the couple on their fight against cancer....By the way the lottery win would NOT be taxable income, its tax free, they gave it all away.

Posted for the elevation of facts over partisan nonsense (from any side.) If our country has any hope, we have to rediscover the greatness of facts and analysis. Thank you, Vik.

From what I've read, cancer in the US would be cut by 33% if everyone quit smoking. So even a small reduction in the number of people smoking has dramatic impacts on the prevalence of cancer.

Also note that incidence of cancer is different from treatment. Most cancer treaments, sadly, are on average only adding a year or two to the patient's life. There are great stories that surpass that trend. I don't know of any data set that would say you get an extra month or more of life in the US versus Canada, once you've been diagnosed.
