I'm really shocked more people have not seen jewish people pray before. Haven't you guys seen the end of Ghostbusters?

To annunciate the words jews usually bob or lurch their heads.

Hasidic Jews are very Orthodox. You could call them "Fundimentalist". They wear black, have long curls as sideburns, pray several times daily (especially at sunrise), and keep strict Kosher dietary laws.

Regular Jews are like me. I forgot 99% of what I learned in Sunday School once I got Bar Mitzvah'd. I wear black, but stylishly (definitely black leather in winter, and black designer suits). I have Elvis Presley sideburns. I go to synagogue 2-3 times a year, and I eat the hell out of pork and shellfish.

    :D

I thought Canadians were the reasonable version of us.

It is not uncommon to pray before your flight takes off. People are often nervous about flying, and the possibility that someone will blow up your plane makes it an even more appropriate time to pray.

I’ve never seen a Jew pray before, and I’ve had Jewish friends and classmates. The only place I’ve seen Hasidic Jews was in a small group on a street corner in Montreal once, but I’ve never seen one in Calgary. I have seen Muslims do their daily prayers and I’m guessing it’s a somewhat similar thing, but they generally pray in private, unless you know them pretty well and then they generally let you know what they’re doing before they do it.

Hasidic Jews are very distinctive looking but they’re so rare that I’m sure many people have never seen one.

new yorker and his family were hanging out at their house and some rich guy drove by and called them pyramid builders and told them to go back to the sinai. so new yorker followed him to the country club where he was going to play golf and new yorker went and told the manager who revoked the rich guy's membership.

Maybe not in Calgary, but there are plenty in LA, New York, London and Israel. And in those places, I doubt anyone would make any fuss.

As for being profiled...I get profiled all the time. I live in Israel, and I'm 6'1", large, blond, red bearded, blue-eyed with a shaved head (now that my hair is falling out) with cowboy boots and a tattoo of the Gonzales Flag. There's security at almost every doorway, so I get frisked everywhere I go. They often think I'm some kind of Russian criminal, because those are the only large blond people in Israel with boots and tattoos. Same-same.

They always ask if I have a weapon. Sometimes politely, sometimes nervously, but they always ask, and they *don't* ask my friends.

I live with it. I stand out, and while I wouldn't look at all threatening at a Willie Nelson show in Houston, or at a punk show in LA, I look pretty wierd walking around Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. I think it's pretty ignorant of the Canadian crew to freak out like that, but I also don't subscribe to pissing myself with political correctness.

People who stand out and look different get noticed. And makes people nervous. And that's the way it is. All this terrorism stuff might make us notice more, but it's always been there, IMHO.

I don't know how many times I've gone places with black friends in the US that I've gone to before alone, and been treated *totally* different. I can also remember my stupid step-mother afraid to get on a plane in the mid-80's because she saw some Muslim man pray in the terminal before getting on it.

People are afraid of what they aren't used to. I'm sure if most of you saw 20 Jazz fans in a 7-11 you'd be nervous. :p

Hmmm - should prayer be banned on commercial airline flights?

If anyone in Houston wants to see a real live Hasidic Jew, drive along Fondren between South Braeswood and Willowbend right before sundown on a Friday. We got 'em here too....not very many, but we got 'em.
