Absolutely! He’s the guy who went after the Spanish when they were poaching our fish (Turbot, was it?) and he had our boys drag up one of their illegal nets that they cut lose when they were trying to make a getaway to prove what they were doing. He was also part of the brat pack in Ottawa for a while but wasn’t one of Jean’s people iirc and left federal politics some years ago now. I think he’d be a great leader. Another guy from your part of the world I really liked was Clyde Wells. What ever happened to him?

Blaine, Wash. — American authorities closed the border crossing to British Columbia on Tuesday after an exchange of gunfire on the U.S. side between border guards, police and two murder suspects from California who were eventually apprehended.

The two men were pursued by American police in a high-speed chase along Interstate 5 in Washington state before the men ran the U.S. border crossing in an attempt to get into Canada.

“They are very dangerous suspects,” said Bill Elfo, sheriff of Whatcom County.

An unspecified number of Canadian border agents, who are unarmed, left their posts during the incident because they were concerned about their safety. Managers took over and border security was not compromised, said Paula Shore, a spokeswoman for the Canada Border Services Agency.

Ms. Shore refused to say Tuesday night how many Canadian border agents left their posts because of the perceived danger. She said less than four of the more than 20 British Columbia border crossings were involved.

“A few officers exercised their right to refuse to work because of what they perceived as imminent danger,” Ms. Shore said in a telephone interview. Under the labour code, “any worker has the right to refuse to work if they feel they are in imminent danger.”

Border service managers took over and “as far as the travelling public is concerned, they would notice no difference,” she said. “We still have highly trained people on the front lines doing their job.”

The Canadian Department of Human Resources “came and assessed the situation for us,” she said, and staffing had returned to normal by late Tuesday night.

The chase, which reached speeds of 160 kilometres an hour, began after Whatcom County sheriff deputies were told that the two suspects had been seen in Custer, Wash., about 10 kilometres south of the border on I-5.

A deputy sheriff tried to make contact with them but they fled.

The men ran the U.S. customs station at the Peace Arch crossing, but police continued their pursuit.

Their vehicle veered across Peace Arch Park and the men were driving north in the southbound lane of I-5. They were eventually stopped by a sheriff deputy who rammed their car with his vehicle.

When the murder suspects tried to flee, shots were exchanged between them and U.S. law enforcement authorities.

One of the men was shot and taken to hospital for treatment. The other was in federal custody.

“Apparently there was a collision involved and the suspects exited the vehicle,” said Trooper Bob Wilson of the Washington State Patrol. “I don't know who shot first.”

The extent of the wounded man's injuries was not known. No law enforcement officers were injured, said Sheriff Elfo.

When the car came across the U.S. side of the border, Sheriff Elfo said two uniformed Homeland Security officers were almost struck by the vehicle.

When it did come to a stop, it was about a metre from the line designating the Canadian border, he said.

“I'm very proud of all our people involved,” said Sheriff Elfo. “It's a highly dangerous business trying to capture suspects such as these.”

Sheriff's deputies pursued the two men based on an alert put out by police in Richmond, Calif.

A spike belt was laid across the I-5 between Custer and the border, but it didn't stop the suspects' car, Sheriff Elfo said.

Lieutenant Mark Gagan of the Richmond, Calif., police department said because both men were from different countries, Pakistan and Mexico, there were concerns they would leave the United States.

Lt. Gagan said Ishtiaq Hussain, 43, and 22-year-old Jose Antonio Barajas were arrested after the shootout on the U.S. side of the border.

“Right now we're working on extraditing both men back to the San Francisco Bay area to face the murder charges,” he said.

Ashok Malhotra was shot to death in a Richmond, Calif., apartment on Saturday.

Lt. Gagan said police were pleased with the co-operation they received from several levels of law enforcement agencies in the Washington State area.

“It took a considerable amount of co-ordination to get them to focus on our suspects,” he said. “The fact that they were taken into custody before they entered Canada helped us very much.”

The incident prompted officials to divert traffic to the Pacific highway crossing at the border between Washington state and British Columbia. The border crossing reopened early Wednesday.

Washington's Transportation Department said it started diverting traffic on I-5 northbound at about 2:30 p.m. PT.

After the chase across the park on Tuesday, large tire marks had been left around the Peace Arch Monument from the police pursuit.

During the summer, the park is usually filled with tourists walking between the two lanes of the I-5 Highway.

“The public is always at risk when we have crosswalks in the middle of the freeway,” said Sheriff Elfo. “It's a very dangerous situation.”

The Peace Arch border crossing was closed for more than two hours a week ago on the Canadian side after customs officers found a suspicious package in a vehicle being driven by a man who was behaving erratically.

The RCMP explosives squad was called in to deal with the package. Four handguns were also found in the car.

Police said the man appeared to be suffering from a mental illness and no charges were laid.

They may have some things in common with the conservatives in America, but most try to distance themselves from their contemporaries in the U.S. Although I'm not happy the conservatives won in Canada, I still gladly take their government over ours any day of the week. Usually there is some kind of deal in place where the party that holds the balance of power gets a few of its issues addressed and agrees not to bring the government down for 2 or more years, but the coalition in this case is going to be an odd one, no matter who the other party is. I wonder if the Conservatives would try to make a deal with the Liberals? With Martin gone that might be doable. How else is it going to work? The block ran scare adds against Harper telling Quebecers not to trust an Albertan, so how could they now make a deal with him? Further, the Conservatives took many votes from the BQ in Quebec and could be their main rivals there now. The NDP is a theoretical possibility, but that would be a coalition between the parties on either end of the spectrum.

I hope those smart Canadians recognize that they are wasting money on things like safe rooms for miners. They really need to turn things around and maximize profit.

ESTERHAZY, Saskatchewan - Fire broke out Sunday in a mine in central Canada, forcing some 70 miners trapped underground to retreat to emergency refuge rooms stocked with oxygen and supplies, a mine official said.

Late Sunday, a rescue team reached one of the rooms, made sure everyone was safe, then closed them back inside until the air inside the mine could be cleared of toxic gases, said Marshall Hamilton, a spokesman for Mosaic Company, the Minneapolis-based firm that operates the potash mine.

“In those refuge stations, they can seal themselves off and there’s oxygen, food and water,” Hamilton told CBC Radio. “And they can stay in there for at least 36 hours.”

Hamilton said the fire broke out around 3 a.m. nearly a mile underground in the province of Saskatchewan. The miners reported smoke and quickly headed for the safe refuge rooms.

Hamilton said company officials could not establish a radio link with 30 of the miners but a team was able to enter one of the refuge rooms late Sunday and talk to the workers.

‘Lot of relief’
“I won’t kid you, there was a lot of relief in that,” Hamilton said.

He said the rescue team took a roll call of all the miners, checked their health and then helped them seal up the room again before leaving.

Hamilton said they believed they had found the source of the smoke and were working on extinguishing the fire. He said the mine would be cleared of smoke and toxic gas before miners were evacuated, adding “we’d rather do this safely than quickly.”

“We’ll go get them when we’re absolutely confident that the fire is out and the smoke and the toxic gases that are associated with fires have left our operations and the air is safe for them to breathe,” he said. “They’re safe where they are, they’re safe in there for many, many hours, potentially even days.”

‘Sooner rather than later’
He said that some of the miners’ families had gathered at the mine.

“They’re a little bit tired. They’re a little bit anxious. They have confidence that we’ve going to safely bring them up,” he said. “Nevertheless, they’d like to see them sooner rather than later.”

Potash is a pinkish-grey mineral used in the production of agricultural fertilizer.

The mine, which was Saskatchewan’s first potash operation when it opened in 1962, is located near Esterhazy, about 130 miles northeast of Regina.
