Strange question, probably half of the famous/rich people in this world. Most of them are azzholes and cruel.

John Lennon. I admire a lot of his personal causes, but him beating of a servant, or delivery boy or whoever it was, being a crappy father to Julian, and not a good husband to Cynthia are flaws.

Actually I don't dislike him as a person, just dislike those things about him. I admire that he apologized for beating, and I understand that everyone has flaws.

I guess it's just a matter of good characteristics outweighing the bad ones that determines if I actually dislike someone.

I bet you can dig up dirt on 80% of famous/historical figures. Borges comes to my mind first, the guy had the prejudices of his hero Schopenhauer, which is just silly for a person of his stature and the age he lived, but still, you can appreciate his genius.

This is a generalization, but almost every band ever has a douche lead singer.

In general, I find it difficult to separate a person's character from a person's accomplishments. Humility and appreciation are two things that I hold in high regard when people are successful, because for the most part, they had to have SOME lucky breaks come their way in order to get where they are. No one person is responsible for EVERYTHING that's happened to them (good or bad) in their lives, and acknowledgement of that fact is important. However, there are some people whose acts supersede their personal flaws...but it's rare. Mahatma Gandhi being a terrible father comes to mind as an example.

What a coincidence. I just watched Mission Impossible 4 for the first time yesterday. It was really good.

But in general it's a case by case thing.

I have always done my best to try and separate personal and professional relationships and it works "most" of the time.

I have no problem working with someone I personally dislike, if they are good at the job at hand. By the same token, I have had close friends that I abhored working with on a professional level.

When it's double plus good, it's double plus good.

What about someone who you respect as a person but not necessarily their work?

Bill Gates and windows. Super nice guy in person and plenty of charity work.
Brad Pitt - also very nice and down to earth but not that great of an actor.

Guns 'n Roses was one of my favorite groups (the original band), but I heard Axl was a douche and very selfish.
