The thing that isn't being mentioned here is that most of us cultivate our fanhood before the College years.

Growing up in California I cheered for UCLA basketball, etc.

Not true in my case. I just dont have the time. Rockets/Texans/Astros already take up enough time.

Kinda what I was getting at - I assume this thread was somewhat in response to me. I'm fine with them being a fan, but when they talk crap, that's where I have the problem.

And someone mentioned this earlier, but I know a lot of UT alums that hate the t-shirt fans. My buddy here at law school gets pissed when he sees someone with a UT shirt on, mostly bc he assumes they have no ties to the actual school. I don't share the same animosity if someone were wearing a Texas Tech shirt, so maybe it's a bigger thing at UT.

(On second thought, of course it's a bigger problem at UT - they've been more successful, so more people would bandwagon - duh.)

Exactly right. In my house, college sports weren't a big deal so I never developed any affinity for college teams. I just watch whoever plays entertaining football.

Lots of kids grow up falling in love with a college team for one reason or another and are fans long before they ever go to school.

You would be incorrect. Some grownups think that people reveling in their high school and college glory days, while living in the past and ascribing some form of special entitlement based upon college attendance is ridiculous.

    Why was Florida's title bogus?

What's wrong with school spirit? some people identify more with school than city. lots of people move cities for whatever reason, personal, professional etc.

please, lets not get him started on what is almost undoubtedly the old "UT beat OU, but TT beat UT, but OU beat TT!" argument.

    You guys are silly.

Florida's fake title has nothing to do with the UT-TT-OU mess. I'm over that. Texas didn't get the job done at TT.

But, I'm not over the fact that 4 teams, FL, USC, UTAH and TEX, all had equal arguments to be the champion last year, but it's Florida that gets to be called the champion. That's BS. Then their fans, of course, are going to gloat about how they are the *champs.

The truth is that no champion emerged in 08.

Speaking on the Professional/College debate, I think there is a misconception in the College Athletes work harder than Professional athletes.

Professional teams travel way more than top College teams do and the schedule for professional athletes is longer so a lot of them often wear down more or try to consume energy for the long run.

except for the fact that they actually won the championship game. Sucks for USC, Utah, and Texas, but Florida was there and they won. Now, if you want to talk about the title than USC claims from earlier in the decade, then you'd have an argument.

    this...

while I am sure you know more UT alums than I, the handful that I do know have never given me a hint of FFB's sentiment. It's rubbish.

I think I'm the one that brought up the "i prefer Pro Sports" issue in this thread.

    I went to Texas.

You do realize that there is no NCAA Football champion...EVER, right? The NCAA has never recognized a single football title at the D1-A level. A champion did emerge. Florida was the BCS Champion, the USA Today Coaches Poll Champion, and the Associated Press Champion. There are several other services that award the championship, but those are the three heralded as the biggies.

how is it bandwagonish? maybe if you joined in after we won our last championship, but if you live in ny and cheer for the rockets, but you're not from houston, or have any affiliation with the state of texas, you just so happen to enjoy watching that team, just as many people are fans of the lakers or the suns because they enjoy watching kobe or the fast pace suns offense...you don't have to be from or live in the area where a team resides, sports transcend such trivial things

I would argue this by saying that Texas 05 title and Florida's title in 06 are undisputed among fans.

Can't say that about the 08 Gators.
