A gallon of milk won't take me 20 - 30 miles. You would think there is more involved with refining crude oil to gasoline than milking cattle, so I don't mind. And if it came down to the point of where I couldn't afford gas, I would have to make due by riding my bike or taking the bus.
For some of us that's not an option. I'm in insurance sales and drive anywhere between 0 and 150 miles per day-- probably an average of 60 miles a day or so. A fillup runs $42-$46 and lasts about a week... or less!
That's true. I know it's tough on the wallet driving frequently like you do or if you have a gas guzzler. I don't think gas will ever be below $2.00 (maybe even $2.50) again, though. Not with China emerging as a player in the world market. Imagine if all of the people in this picture start driving cars.
You drive a canary? Just picking at all the lack of reading posts thouroughly represented in this thread... LOL.
Was baited one too many times. That's what I get for sending apologetic e-mails to Clutch telling him to ban me from the forum if I got into it with another poster one more time. Oh well, I'd love to go back as I've mellowed tremendously in the last 14 months, but if not, that's cool too. Anyway, no need to derail another thread. Gas prices suck!
I can't afford my gas any more. Guess I picked a bad time to move from the Heights to Cypress... and a bad time to trade my MINI in on a Magnum. I spend 50 per week and my wife probably spends another 25 per week. (We car pool as often as possible to keep her gas bill down).
I take the bus. My wife (in consulting) gets reimbursed by work for every mile she drives to/from work. How much does that kick ass? Otherwise that $50/wk would really suck. Carry on.
Um...gas is one of the most taxed thing in America. There are clean air taxes, crude taxes, refinery taxes, gas taxes at the federal, state, and local level. As much as half if not more of the price of gas is taxes. PLUS, the EPA has raised the price of gas as much as 30% by requiring "summer formulas" that burn cleaner in the summer, but are much more expensive to produce. The government drives the price of gas UP, not DOWN.
I'm spending about $120 a month, driving about 1,800 miles a month. 35 miles each way to work. Around 45 mpg, traveling by motorcycle. I park for free and take the HOV lane. My co-worker makes a similar trip by car and she's paying about $220 per month, then has to pay $65/month for parking and contend with rush-hour traffic. I kind of miss bicycling in to work though. Now I don't get any exercise.
I loved it when I was in the Netherlands and people bicycled everywhere. I was a little surprised to see that most of my Dutch friends had a commuter bike and then a separate road bike that they went touring/camping to various countries with. I just assumed that they'd be tired of riding a bicycle everywhere and not want to do it for leisure.
Yes - I know. But there is more to gas than just what you see at the filling station. Fossil fuels are taxed, but they are also subsidized - I don't understand it either.
