“JVG and almost everyone says theyn do not have a true PG offense so we don't need a true PG. Who plays a true PG anymore anyhow? No one, not even NJ.”

Right. But, the Rockets need to find someone at some position who can run the team and get them flowing. I’ve seen plenty of teams win without a traditional point guard. BUT, all teams have someone who QB’s the offense so to speak. That’s what we need. Yao is not assertive enough. and Francis, Mobley, and Taylor are primarily scorers. That’s the core of the team. Someone mentioned Jackson brining the ball up. I’ve seen the Rockets do that some. It seemed to work, but I don’t know if Jim Jackson has the temperament/mentality to do it for an entire season. You'd sure find out how much of an ego Francis had if Jackson was given the job.

There is an old saying “the spoon that stirs the tea”. That’s what we’re missing. My hope is that Francis can still develop into that player. In my mind its imperative that Van Gundy come up with some sort of offensive set that Francis can get comfortable in. Something he can stay with for a couple of years and learn to be effective in. I still maintain that many of the problems we see in the Rockets are due to the fact that we have not had a core group players go through multible training camps, preseasons, and the seasons running the same offensive philosophy/set. End result the Rockets don't know who they are as a team corporately so they don't know how to fit into the team individually

My fondest hope is that we don’t have to trade anyone. That somehow Francis could be, if not the point guard, at least one of the players to take us to a championship. I like everyone on this team. When their on each player is fun to watch. I’d really like to see this team jell. That’s my hope, but so far this season it seems like we have good players and a good coach who just don’t mesh. But, season is young.

A lot of posters have said that francis had low assists because his teamates had bad shooting %..tonite Nets are shooting 41%,game is nearly over and kidd has 11 assists....good pgs get assists, teams that have lower shooting % than houston have very many more assists from their pg.....Francis has to go or be moved, houston will not beat the good teams in the west without a pg.....and he can take moooochie with him when he goes....

The Rockets can win a championship with this team, and they cant go to the playoffs because they are in the West, if the Rockets were in the East all the years they can go to the playoffs

SF is a good player but a traditional pg, he should be a good sg.
Like allen iverson he is bad pg but a good sg and a great player, but yes AI is better than SF

    MManal,

Thanks for the post. As usual, you are dead-on, my friend. I would love to see us get Brent Barry and Rashard Lewis as well as they would be perfect for an offense designed around Yao.

However, who would you want the Rockets to get to play the 4? I am thinking we need a physical, almost enforcer type player like a Kenyon Martin.

We can win it with SF, but not as the premier player. We need Yao to really start emerging (he will). We need CAT to play consistent (he is improved). We need MoT to rebound, defend AND provide the 3rd scoring threat (he is). And we still need one more piece at 3. Beyond that, we need the offensive play to catch up to the defense. I am still concerned that we are not in the super powers league (LA, Sac, Indiana), but get hot at the right time with the above improvements....

Yes I agree, a defensive minded PF that can rebound and defend would do wonders next to Yao. Cato has had a good season, but the problem is that he simply cannot matchup against opposing PFs that are mobile and there are seemingly tons of those in the Western Conference. I think Cato would have great value to an Eastern Conference team as he could start at center for many of them.

WOW! Those stats just blew me away...This is simply unacceptable for a starting "point guard".

that is actually not the excuse. The excuse is that 4 out of our 5 starters require an iso play to be effective. And isos do not generate in assits. Kidd in the Rockets at most will average 7 assists.

All these assist and TO ratios are somewhat misleading. A much better indication on the efficiency of a point guard is actually the ratio of the total team assists to the individual TOs, in this case the pg. The total team assist number reflects the overall flow of the team offense, which most of the time starts from the pg. I always wonder how come nobody rather use this ratio to grade the performance of a pg. The individual assist number just doesnt tell the whole picture, because a score simpily would not be credited to the pg once more than a pass is made. Could any number crunchers out there tell me how SF would rank if this ratio is used instead.

just give him time to grow ...there is only 2 point guard in the nba that have consistant assists per game, so that leaves 26 other guard out there that is the same as Francis...and please stop comparing him to jason kidd..the man had played for more than 10 years or so...steve is only in his 6..... kobe bryant, Tmac, iverson those player's assists per game are not any better than Francis's....sure they might score 30 points but they jack up 30 shots...people never satisfy what we have

Check the nba TO per game list and toal TO. Francis is at #5 and 4, respectively. One of the worst among pgs.

Man that's depressing. Just before we signed Moochie to his ridiculous contract, we signed Damon Jones as insurance. When Moochie signed, we cut Damon.

So what, Andre Miller is almost dead last and look at their record. How many are the hustle turnovers that really didn't hurt, like off a steal and a forced fast break?

I could only wish. Brent would be the perfect PG for this team. A smart player that is a good spot up shooter. That what you need when you have a great big man. Rashard would rain threes all day long consider the open looks our SF's get. However, I doubt Seattle would do this trade since Rashard is their future. I see them dealing Ray Allen first since his contract is so big and the breakout season Murray is having.

I don't know what kind of contract Murray signed but his a second round player so they might need to make cap room to resign him.
