For some reason many Rockets players do not understand that the position you get the post up player the ball is important. Dmo and dwight often get the ball a couple of feet to far away because the entry pass was to far away. Also angles angles angles. Why can't they understand that the right angles are everything.
The Rockets practice it. Earlier this year McHale was 'complaining' how bad the guards were at it. Papa was the best at entry passes. In McHale's words, Papa could take a break, get a pizza or something, come back after the others had practiced, and still be the best one at it. Bev and Ariza are bad at it. Harden can do it but he's also an efficient offensive player. He usually is the one posting up DMo (I think he knows DMo is more efficient than Howard). Terry probably doesn't have a lot of experience at it. Shooters are looking for their own openings. But yeah, it's a very important weapon because it can open up our 3pt shooting as well.
Wow, this is a great piece on post entry passing. Also brings back a lot of good memories of Yao. Thanks for posting this!
This team is not good at entry passing because... We don't have many good passers in general. Lol. Good passing is a skill. Our best passers are Harden, Papasnifolofokous, and Dmoted. Everyone else is a average to subpar passer. What we need is a real passing PG who can set up guys in the second unit and Dwight/Dmo when they are featured in the offense
Sometimes it is the opposite--they are too patient. Just a long pass can work (ala Kenny Smith to Olajuwon in early offense). There is too much telegraphing... I've seen Beverly miss DMo too many times--he doesn't have point guard vision. Watching film could help him.
