no one can say for 100% certainity that this injury wouldn't have occured if he didn't play summer ball.

he needs to reduce his time in international play AND have his minutes limited until april.

You could make your points clearer if you know Yao did NOT play with CNT last Summer in the Summer League(Yi played), and insead Yao took a honeymoon tour to Europe. :D

That's crap. First of all, YOU don't pay him 15 mil a year. You paid nothing and worse just consuming the CF bandwidth. Furthermore, Yao brought in for the franchise at least 4 times what he is paid. He is money-maker, not you.

Also, it is not that Team China force him to play. In his mind, it is an honor to play for his own country. An honor, get it?

You are narrow-minded and you don't deserve to be a Rocket fan.

good point - he had a lot of rest than and so it's doubtful his injury could be tied back to his CNT commitments.

He just can't play that many minutes in the NBA regular season.

They should limit his minutes until march/april and then gradually increase them to prep for the playoffs.

And probably be careful about playing him heavy minutes during streches of 4 games in 5 nights.

He's been brainwashed to think that.

The biggest honor that any individual can achieve is to compete at the highest level of his respective field. For Yao, it's the NBA. Individual achievement is to be honored because it creates an evironment of striving to be the best you can be. When that happens society as a whole benefits.

Getting beat 120-60 is not an honor. It's lack of competition. Competition is honor.

Putting a bunch of inferior players on one team to play against he best in the world doesn't do anything for them. It just exposes their weakness. THose players should be allowed to flourish individually and play in other leagues to improve their games.

it's not whether yao sees it as an honor to play for china or a partnership with the rox.

it's that the injuries are becoming a regular thing now and it's around his foot/leg area.

he has to choose ONE place where he has to exert more effort for. it's obvious he cannot do both.

he's closer to winning and achieving greatness as a BASKETBALL PLAYER with the rockets. his legacy as an NBA player is not very good right now and will never be great (he will never win a gold medal so that's out of the question) if he never wins with the rockets, which he has a very high chance of doing.

to me, i would choose the rockets. yi is now a very well-known player and he plays for china. he's young and he can still dedicate his time.

yao's not young anymore. his body cannot take the wear and tear like he used to. i would prefer if he dedicates his time to the rockets and help us win the championship, WHICH WE ARE VERY CLOSE TO.

but it's up to yao. i don't blame him for whatever decision he chooses b/c it's the right choice both ways.

but if yao wants to be considered a legend in the basketball realm, success with the rockets will help more than anything.

    Macfan,

Brainwashed to think representing your country is an honor? Elevating the level of play of a team representative of a whole country is not an honor?

    Ridiculous.

You are just brainwashed to think that an NBA championship is the greatest honor.

Don't apply your standards on others.

winning the championship is the greatest honor for a basketball player b/c it's the greatest league in the world. your status/legend as a basketball player will depend on how u do in the NBA ONLY.

sabonis was tremendous in international play but nobody cared in the NBA. yao's status as an NBA player will be just a very good player at this rate b/c he will not play enough as the injuries are obviously from overwork

Well, the world is much much bigger than NBA. A world stage like Olympics is much much bigger than the NBA stage. :D

true, but i'm talking about what he will leave behind as a basketball player, which will be what he did in the NBA.

and his chance of cementing himself as one of the truly great players is by winning with the rockets.

hopefully yao will play in the olympics this time and don't play for china anymore unless it's only the olympics.

Wasn't he was doing his own rehab but they put pressure on him to join their team. I think he played a few games through a minor toe/foot problem.

not when it comes to basketball. It's like saying olympic soccor is bigger than the world cup.

    nope.

i do think if the nba is going to succeed in an international world, it may need to cut back on the number of game a tad bit as to realize players will be active year round.

Elvating your level of play to get beat by 50 instead of 60 is not an honor. It's a humilitation and it's against the human spirit of competition.

No single person can or should represent a country. A country is a collection of individuals who are unique and different from each other.

Individuality should be honored, not group mediocrity. It's about people, not countries. Competition among people fosters individual growth, competition among countries fosters hate and underachievement.

Why should people compete on the basis of geographic boundaries? That is something that they were born into and has nothing to do with competition. If there's no competition what is there to play for? They should compete based on skill level and achievement.

Am I blind or is this rather political conversation rather than basketball one?

There is no comparison between those bball and soccer.

The nations can send the best bball team to Olympics games, but they may not be possible to send their best soccer team to Olympic games, which is why Olympic soccer is not as good as soccer World Cup, where nations can send their best teams.

For Olympic soccer, there are some restrictions. "While professionals are allowed in the men’s tournament, rules restrict teams to players under 23 years old with the exception of three over-age players. "

Some things that may clear both sides ideas:

1- Basketball is not all about NBA just look at the commitment taken from USAbasketball to win the Olympics and on a second look the World Championship.

2- You cannot add a international player and expect him not to compete for their country, actually they usually have the commitment for their country taken before NBA acquires them so the NBA team is in full knowledge of the player´s choice and if not they should when investing so much money in a player.

3- NBA and FIBA have signed an agreement that NBA teams cannot prohibit players for playing for his country (so review point 2 about investing money).

4- China has probably no chances of advancing to quarter finals WITH Yao healthy, so i see ridiculous for him to play if he is not 100% healthy.

5- He plays reduced minutes in FIBA because games are 40 mins long, if he is overworked that will have to point NBA.

If you ask me, if it is someone´s fault it´s Adelmans because he is the one in control of Yao´s minutes, and if someone want to blame china, blame Yi!

I am from Argentina so that no one thinks i´m Chinese.

If were so bad, why dont you go to some Chinese Rockets/Yao site and discuss?

Sometimes I think we really need to start requiring a background check on new members...

I disagree with you there. There seem to be a lot of those people.

I agree with the thread starter.

People are making the case that Yao playing for China is as important as life itself. OTher people think they are sacrificing Yao's success for their political gain. I am one of them.

In the case of Yao, the Chinese government uses basketball for political gain. The only way to convince people that there is prosperity in a poor communist country is to convince them that doing well in basketball replaces not having food on the table. Communism likes symbolism to replace actual achievement. It makes people have a false sense of pride.
