No matter how many times leeb has illustrated that floating those knee rumors was dirty pool, you refuse to acknowledge it. Sure, Landry did end up getting a raise, but without those rumors, the raise was likely to be substantially higher.

It was NOT dirty pool at all, it was SMART business...

You always talk down your free agents and talk UP other team's free agents.

    I can't believe a biz owner like Leeb, doesn't understand negotiation 101.

At the end of the day, a 2nd year player got a raise to $3 million a year, which is more than almost ALL 2nd year players get....

So to me, it ended up a completely fair deal...the rest....just posturing.

    Let's put it like this:

He never had that oh-so-needed invasive knee surgery the team said he needed did he?

If one of my employees was up for review, I wouldn't secretly/anonymously float a false sexual harrassment allegation about him to my competitors. That would definitely drive down his value, but is a blow below the belt, afaic.

I am not understanding your point Verse.

This was a business negotiation tactic....and other teams were free to bring him in for an examination etc.....

What held Carl back from a big offer was not the rumor of needing a knee scope, it was the fact that he was a RESTRICTED free agent, and the Rockets held onto their entire MLE waiting for him to get an offer.

Seriously, this is just typical stuff.....

You are being naive if you think it had ANYTHING to do with other GM's not taking a look.......

Business is business, there was nothing ethically wrong with what Morey did, IMO, and every GM in the league could have brought him in and had their doctors look at him if they really wanted to.....

Of course he was a franchise player. He was Dream's equal for much of their careers and regarded by many outside of Houston to be the better player. Then, Dream just went to another level and blew away everyone including The Admiral.

I can't believe Lee would try to argue that a top 10 Center of All Time and one of the 50 greatest players of all time isn't a franchise guy.

Exactly. Morey let the other teams set Landry's value. They had all the access to Carl they wanted and they came up with a number they were willing to pay and Morey matched it and retained him. Solid move by a more than solid GM.

What's up with this new "individual players before the team" mindset from some posters? Is it an age thing? That's my guess.

It's just not something I would do. There's no doubt in my mind that those allegations at least had some effect. Carl already said he wasn't having the procedure so any "looks" from another team would've been colored with that allegation. Again, I understand the efficacy, but wouldn't have done it, personally. Maybe I'm just old school...

The only problem I had was the floating of the "knee problems". That's all. You see it as ok, and that's fine, too.

As for the "age thing", I'm old enough to know that all actions have consequences...that nothing exists in a realm of absolutivity. You/we may see the fruits of that negotiatory tactic when Landry comes up, or with other FA negotiations.

    Cheers.

P.S. I'm guessing I have a few years on you, Dave_78. I'm also guessing I was just reared a different way, which is just fine.
