Can we afford to keep Carl Landry?

i love our PF mold of Scolandry! they complement each other and i hope we keep both of them. i don't even know why ppl keep wanting bosh and other PFs. i know it's hard to turn down upgrades but scolandry have rarely disappointed me and they are hardly the teams weakness.

Landry has improved but you can't judge him until the season is over. Can he keep this up and can he perform in the playoffs. It's silly to think he can keep this up because this is his 1st year getting more playing time and the chance to shoot (teams will adjust).

We shouldn't factor age, we want to win now with the best roster in the next 3-5 years. If it's a rebuild process (Shane and Yao are gone), stick with Landry.

It's too early to do anything.

Incorrect we are not trying to win now, we are in the process of building a championship contender. Morey is hoping to have the team almost re built for next season, with Yao as our fanchise player.
This season lets hope we make the playoffs! :p

If yao is your franchise player, consider your franchise not going far.

This, folks, is why Morey is so desperate to TRADE for a star rather than sign one.

If we trade for a star this season, every single question about our ability to retain our own players become answered. Once the Rockets no longer care about cap room, we can resign all our players at market value and not have to worry. Scola, Brooks, Landry, Lowry... whoever stays in such a trade can stay here for as long as Morey wants them.

It has nothing to do with like vs reality. Yao is not a franchise player and i said that back in the day. He's not and for the record, there aren't many franchise players in the league even if they're paid like one.

Had Yao stayed healthy (and stayed in the States at least part of the summers to help his development), I would strongly disagree. The guy is unique. While he's never gotten the number of blocks one might expect from someone pushin' 8 feet tall, the big fella alters countless shots and is very intimidating in the post. Terrific shooting touch, outstanding at the charity stripe, excellent defensive rebounder... heck, I'm sounding like a Yao Defender! Seriously, considering the dearth of 5's worth a damn in this league, why wouldn't someone consider a healthy Yao a franchise player?

Of course, you may be talking about what we ended up with, the unhealthy Yao, due to injury. :(

What about it? My point is that he has improved from last year and is a go to guy THIS year.

It really had or never will be about physical talent as opposed to mental capacity. Yao was never a franchise player because he never had the toughness or nastiness to be one. The line that seperates franchise caliber players from all star caliber guys is mostly mentality. Yao being vut in the same mental mold as david robinson is the reason he's not a franchise player. A franchise player won't be liked by all teammates.Sometimes you have to chew a guys ass off even if you're having a off game or so. The leadership qualities go beyond doing your job and going home. Its really not in his dna to be like that, but you have to be like that at times.

Well, I disagree. While temperament certainly separates the great from the rest, the type of temperament a player has doesn't, IMO, preclude being worthy of the "Franchise Player" label. Robinson was certainly a franchise player, just as he was most certainly NOT an Hakeem Olajuwon, a Larry Bird, a Dr. J, or a Michael Jordan. Those fellows all had the edge you and I are thinking of. I just think you are being too arbitrary. :)

When i think of franchise guys, i think of a guy the team cant win without. The rockets have shown they can win without yao. the spurs went into the lotto with robinson.

Yao was tough and nasty, then Thomas fell on his leg.

We could probably continue down this road, splittin' hairs. I still think Robinson was a franchise center. He was just on a much lower level than Dream or the other guys I mentioned (and others I left off).

Based on your logic, how would you classify Olajuwon in the 91 season after he broke his cheekbone?

since these 2 guys are all productive in this team,I don't think our boss will care too much to pay the luxury tax for them.

anyway I think luis and carl both could demand approximately 7~8min/year,so our PF position would cost us 15min/year ,i think it would not be an overpriced salary for scolandry compared with their great contribution .

I also hope yao could cut his salary to release almost 5min cap for us ,then DM would resign lowry and other free agent
