which is why Scola might be traded

he's 30 in April and in need of being resigned at a critical time when we happen to bring a PF off the bench that is a younger, very productive player

Landy is staying. Les has his teeth locked up in a safe. He gets to try them on when he scores more than 20pts in a game. :p

    Hopefully we can keep both.

I'm hoping we can keep Scola with a MLE or slightly higher than MLE deal and then get Landry for deal between 8-10 million. 16 million for the 4 spot with their productivity isn't that bad especially since they cover the 5 spot sometimes in our offense.

A rule of thumb is if the production is close, you always go with the young guy. DD, you always talk about losing explosion like it just happens 1 day or like thats all carls game. People said if amare had knee injuries he would be washed up, remember that? I'm pretty sure you were probably 1 of the ones saying that. What landry and amare has his the ability to creat space. Landry can creat space on the perimeter and shoot jumpers over people, something scola cant. I belive and like the thread i made last offseason that landry is the better player and the younger player. Landry isnt a great rebounder, but hes a ok rebounder, scola is a really good rebounder. Both are average on defense and next time scola passes the ball, let me know cause hes a black hole.I think landry would be a 20ppg 9 reb guy if he played 35 mins and started. I think if scola played 35 mins, he would rebound better and maybe got another basket, but thats not shabby either. The tie braker always goes to the younger player.

We can afford him but if we have the chance to get a superstar he and Brooks are the first players on the list to be traded (well, other than the obvious non-rotation players). They aren't much better than our other 6 rotation players but to other teams they appear to be because they are our biggest scoring threats.

Landry has the the highest perceived value to actual production ratio of anyone on our team, if that makes any sense.

Landry is still improving, though. So, if he can become a star player who demands doubles his versatility in the post could prove to be very useful.

Landry is a David West Lite and 3 yrs younger than Scola. I'm for keeping Landry on this one. Scola is more efficient but Landry has a bigger punch. Hope Rockets can keep both.

Not so fast my backstabbing friend.

    ;)

It is not as black and white as you always like to make it out to be.

A lot depends on the dynamics of the rest of the team, and what salary each will command.

For instance, how many years does Luis have versus Carl? They are only 2 or 3 years apart so they should both be good for the next 3 - 5 years.

Now, if Scola is going to get nearly the same production and at only half the cost, then obviously you go with Scola.....

Younger does not always = the better play......

And how about Lowry? Is he another MLE deal? I think so.

I could easily see one of these teams with lots of cap space offer Landry more than we are willing to pay once the big names are off the board ($10 million or more). They've sold their fans this 2010 strategy probably for a while now and they have to come up with a good player.

I hope you are right and we can sign Landry for $8 million, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Morey play it safe and deal either Landry or Scola with TMAC either...

Don't forget Brooks will be in for a big pay day in one year and Yao's contract will be up as well.

If carl is still peaking and 4 yrs younger vs scola already peaked , why is that not black and white. Scola will command at least his cap hold of 6m landry is probably at least 1m more, but he's going to be the better player this yr and going forward. Landry could push all star status with 35 mins. I highly doubt scola will get close to all star.

Lots of "if" in your arugment.

Landry is not the better player now, he is the better offensive player, but there is a reason Scola is the starter, he is the better overall player.

Maybe Landry becomes better, but he needs a LOT of work on defense, and boxing out and rebounding.

I don't think it is as clear cut as you are making it out to be, and you are making up numbers to suit your argument.

So, really, none of us know what happens, I could see us keep them both, keeping one of them or moving them both....who knows?

carl is definitely the better producer out on the court with his explosiveness and ability to get big buckets/rebs at the end of games.....but i'm not so sure he's that much more valuable as a player vs luis - the reason being that scola can log time for you at the 5 on a regular basis effectively and this is a much more difficult position to fill than the 4 spot that landry's limited to........plus scola's an ironman who never misses games and is consistently at or near double-doubles every nite.....so i'd say their values are about even

how about we just wait until next summer when we have some numbers to crunch? There's too many possible and significant moves between now and then to speculate on whether we can or not.

That's why this is a forum.

We can speculate, because we aren't Daryl Morey; none of our choices will affect the Rockets' organization.

Plus, its mad fun to speculate what will happen. :)

    DD,

Who has had the better year, Landry or Scola? Therein lies the answer to whom the better player is. Don't let Adelman's reluctance to alter the situation fool you into believing Scola's a better player at this moment.

I think they have both had excellent years.

Honestly to me you could not slide a thin piece of typing paper between the two.

I value Carl's offensive prowess, and Scola's versatility and rebounding equally.

What happens when Yao comes back? Will Landry still get all these iso touches?

Scola can do everything he's doing now without the play being called for him.

This year his Jump Shot has been money especially from the FT line. No inconsistent at all.

And He never gets out of the 12/8 mold? How about 14/9 that is his ave. this season. And the only reason he is not 16/10 is because coach only play him 30 minutes. (because he need to give minutes to Mandry off the bench)

If/when Yao comes back, the midrange jumper will be the open shot. Carl is more than adept at that shot. Just because he can squeeze it off under tight coverage, doesn't mean he can't pull it in a catch and shoot. Scola's J is limited by needing to be wide open. Landry is not.

Btw, I don't sculpt this team around the assumption of Yao's return. IMO, Yao's more likely to be injured than to be playing. Much like McG had to find a way to play with the current team, Yao will have to do the same - IF/WHEN - he returns.

Its wrong to imply that Landry does not score as efficiently with in the normal play sets of the offense. There are times in the game that the Rockets specifically try to get the ball to Landry and times that they specifically try to get it to Scola. Mostly they just run their offense and who ever is open takes the shot. The same can be said for Brooks, Ariza and Anderson.

Landry is clearly having the better year, and is still getting better. Landy has become a GO-TO GUY, something Scola will never be.

However, it makes sense to not screw up chemistry by changing the lineup.

As far as resigning him, who knows, some team might overpay for Carl, and it might not be worth it to lock him up for a huge contractfor many years. The NBA landscape is littered with albatross contracts given to guys who looked like they could be perennial All-Stars, but for one reason or another, did not get there.

And I doubt a team will overpay for Scola, given his age and upside. So will most likely be much cheaper.
