The problem with that quote though is that 2012 is nowhere near this year in terms of Watt's performance level. He destroyed that year with his performance this year, especially considering how much offenses tried to account for him this year. The only thing that had 2012 on top was the stupid sacks number, and now they're equal after 2014 Watt caught up late. The media doesn't want to admit it, but 2014 Watt is one of the greatest seasons that has ever been played by a defensive player. 2014 Rodgers isn't even out of the pack among his peers, and when you look at historical numbers it's a joke. Basically they're leaning on a 5-int season as their excuse. As far as winning, Brady Manning Romo and Wilson have done just as well if not better; I see no reason why they should have singled him out except for the narrative that the media wants to believe, that he is the current greatest QB out there.
You know Eddie Lacy gained over 1,100 yards on the ground and 1,500 total yards to go with 13 TDs. That puts him in the top 10 among running backs. That's above average. Watt deserves it. He's earned it. But I won't be surprised in the least if he doesn't get it.
Great post! I wish they would change the award to best overall performance instead of MVP. It will be absurd to see Rodgers beat out possibly the greatest defensive season ever by not even being head and shoulders above his own position.
lol so basically they want to award rodgers for throwing only 5 picks in the national arena league. is he even doing something special like griese and brady leading their teams to an undefeated season? 4 losses isn't special. if they vote rodgers, i'd feel sorry for the voters' mothers. bunch of sheep.
I just don't understand how Watt can't not be voted MVP. The only thing holding him back is that he isn't a quarterback. People also like to say that he "only" had 20.5 sacks which did not lead the league. But what people fail to realize is how much he affected the game. He was in there pretty much every play, and was in the quarterbacks face, making him at least rush the throw what seemed like the majority of the time. Not to mention the touchdowns. He seriously had one of the greatest single seasons a defensive lineman has ever had in the NFL. If he doesn't win MVP, especially to Rodgers, then the award is an absolute joke.
Does anybody else think it is ironic that people were saying the 2012 season Watt had might have been the best defensive season ever, and he would not duplicate that season, only for Watt to one-up it 2 years later? People were saying then if Watt didn't win MVP, defensive players will not win them anymore, and now they are saying that again. Watt is simply incredible.
Two years ago I remember telling my friends, "it's gonna be a damn shame that JJ Watt's best season in his career is gonna end up being the year after his rookie year. I mean, he's so young and all, but how do you top that? Well, now we know. He's still got room to go up! PLEASE NFL, don't vote Watt as the MVP. You'll just make him angrier, hungrier, and he will unleash a new level of beatdown the likes of which you can't even fathom.
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12111694/jj-watt-rob-gronkowski-unanimously-voted-ap-all-pros Watt unanimously voted in--interestingly would be a 1st team DE and 2nd team DL based on votes. Add another weird feather in his cap
2014 Stephenson Award Winner J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans When all is said and done the Dwight Stephenson Award may end up being renamed in J.J. Watt’s honor. This is the award’s third season in existence and the third straight year it has been won by Watt. If anything, this season was even more convincing a victory than each of the past two. It’s beginning to get difficult to explain just how much better than his peers Watt is. Zero is designed to be the ‘average’ PFF grade. There were 20 3-4 DEs with a grade lower than zero this season. Only 27, including Watt, graded above zero. The second-best of those was Sheldon Richardson with a +39.9 grade, nine sacks, 54 total pressures and 32 defensive stops. Watt posted an insane +107.5 grade, 21 sacks, 119 total pressures and 61 defensive stops. He also had 10 batted passes, four forced fumbles, an interception, a defensive touchdown, a safety… oh, and he scored three receiving touchdowns moonlighting as a tight end in goal-line packages. Watt is so far out on his own in terms of play that he breaks every graph we create to try and illustrate it, extending axes and generally sitting off on a data point all to himself. He is completely redefining what we thought a defensive player was capable of, and is only getting better. This season Watt moved around more than ever before, becoming a true edge-rusher more than an interior presence. His highlight reel is mind-blowing, and reminds you of watching NFL players when they were back in high school – he is just bigger, faster or stronger than everybody that is being tasked with stopping him, often all three at once. We are truly privileged to be watching one of the best players to ever lace up cleats in action. J.J. Watt is the now three-time winner of the Dwight Stephenson Award. He is the best player in football, period. https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/01/07/2014-dwight-stephenson-award/
The [fans] nation has spoken. Give it to him!

ALL 50 states think J.J. Not adding anything that hasn't already been said... Just looking at JJ's stat line again for the year. It is just unbelievable. Just un-freaking believable. 20.5 sack 80 yard interception return for TD 4 forced fumbles 5 fumble recoveries, one for a touchdown 1 safety 59 tackles, 19 assists 3 offensive touchdowns/catches
It won't be unanimous. Justin Houston almost broke the sack record this year. Someone in KC will vote for him.
Really? Anybody who didnt vote for JJ should just have the snot slapped smooth out of them. Seriously! There isnt even a debate.
