JayZ50 - I realize we are off topic, but I will try to tie them together. We are in agreement about Ming. A Shaq-like presence in the paint would allow Cat & Steve to exend their defense out further. During the discussion, kidrock8 pointed out that the Lakers were the #1 3pt defending team to which I responded that #2 & #3 were the Spurs & Sixers (and the bottom 8 had no post D). IMO, an interior defensive presence has significance even that far out on the court. I won't go so far as to say that the Rockets D with Shaq = the Lakers D with Shaq. To the Lakers credit, they do play solid team D. Even the most optimistic poster at CC would not confuse Rice or MoT 's D with Kobe's D. The Rockets are still going to have to learn good team D (something many posters like leebigez and others always mention). Things like quick rotations and defending the post entry passer will need to be learned with Ming or with Cato. My final 2 comment regarding a superb defensive center in Houston: 1) It should obsolete the 3 guard offense which to me is a net negative when D is considered. 2) Playing alongside a Shaq or Ming type player should make EG a Top 10 shotblocker because he will be allowed to roam in from the weakside. (Look at how well Horry does and his present day skills aren't even close to EG's). One last personal comment. The Lakers have been inspired to play good D because they have seen immediate results (Championships). It may be slower learning curve for the Rockets and they may not buy into it right away. On the plus side, good defense may allow the Rockets to get easier (fastbreak/transition) baskets which IMHO is a big plus. Easier baskets means less dependence on ISO's. Wouldn't we all be happier at that prospect?
LA may not win the championship even with Shaq in this year. And there is no chance of LA winning the ring without Shaq.
