To clarify, I think the Cards should have offered something like 5 yrs, $30MM/yr with some combo of option years after that. If Pujols didn't accept, that's his deal. But if the Cards really "only" offered in the $23MM range, it seems to me they weren't interested in signing him. Someone will offer more than that next year, so all they did was waste their exclusive negotiating period.

Now, I think it'd be great to sign him, even if the Astros overpay. But not for ten years; that's just stupid. And if Albert doesn't know that, shame on him. I'd go for seven though. (Heck, it ain't my money!!)
I think they can. Not immediately, mind you. But they let the Rangers (or whomever) sign him, and in 3 years, when they realize that the salary is crippling the team, they trade for him, with the Rangers (or whomever) picking up 1/4 of his salary.
I'd love it.. but no. Because I've said this since November.. Pujols won't have a deal before ST (and obviously that deadline has now passed), he won't negotiate in season, and he will become a UFA. And the Cards will re-sign him to an insane deal that other clubs will either match or beat, but once it approaches ARod's deal, he'll take it and stay
This thread is so dumb. The Astros already had Pujols. For like almost his whole frickin' career.
