If anyone here remember Sam Cassell, his first year. V-Span's play reminded me of that a little bit. Span is not as athletic and and maybe not as great decision maker as Sam was at the time, but he hasn't really gotten much experience or playing time for us to really know how he will adapt. Looking at how the Gundy played Nachbar & how he actually turned out to be decent with playing time, he really hasn't gotten a shot to play. I know that was after some time, but you have to give the player some chances.
I would of had to attend the Rockets practices to answer this question. If Rafer wasn't so bad we probably wouldn't even know at this point if Luther Head could even shoot a 3 pointer. I've always thought our former coach would only play vets because he didn't know how to coach, train, develop, or trust younger players.
Just wanted to mention that the results of this poll made it to the greek newspaper "Sports Voice" which is a very old and established sports newspaper with a Panathinaikos (spanoulis' old team agenda)... It was used for an article entitled : 90% Votes for Spanoulis and talking about how the majority of the Rockets fans think' Spanoulis should get more PT. Here's the link in greek: http://www.athlitikh.gr/article_detail.asp?node_serial=001001001003002&node_id=67&article_id=7425
Too bad this poll is totally unscientific and should not be used in such an article under any circumstances.
I like how the article references Hoopsworld, but not this site. Greek "news" reporting is about on par with Sina.com.
The 90% vote... VSpan 20/5/2007, Assiduity: Sofia Gjalleli' His own prorogatives and preferences are explicit. He clarified himself reaching in the airport in Houston. He said with his absolute clarity. Vasilis Spanoulis votes Panathinaikos. The same moment somebody in the Houston vote, giving him indeed percentages… : 90% of friends of Rockets believe that the Greek guard badly did not play and that he wished he could be found on the court for at least 15 min in each match! And they are not alone that him give vote of confidence, the hour where in Greece a agreement with the "clover" strikes something more from likely. Self-reliance! The referendum of friends of Rockets has four categories. The 39,6% believe that the Spanoulis should be surrogate point guard on the team and that he will become sure starter in due course. The 30,17% that he will be backup guard, playing however at least 15 min in each fight, while 20,7% believe that this moment of he is already a starter point guard on the team. The minority with a percentage 9,48% believes that he cannot even play in the NBA. Starter or backup. And very probably they are those that… pour black teardrop for the redundancy of Van Gundy. And those be few, as it appears also from blogs in Houston and mainly the friends of team, where Spanoulis has very powerful eats club - essentially from Greeks, but also somebodies that him have put aim of their life prove that do not even know basketball! Their surname in any case is not Van Gundy… "Can Adelman Keep Spanouilis" The redundancy of Van Gundy made the VSpan first subject in the Hoopsworld. The title in the relative article is "Can Adelman keep Spanoulis". With the prospect that this of will be next project of the Houston Rockets. What it says below? "The Jeff Van Gundy clarified that Vasilis Spanoulis would not play. His behavior sprang very probably from the fact that the then general director of Rockets, Carroll Dawson, had said to Spanoulis that he would have playing time. However that all the decisions regarding playing time were Van Gundy and only. And his decision was that he would not play. The player understood that he was had promised playing time, so that he leaves an important role with his team in Greece, which he would leave only with such guarantees. Spanoulis played in hardly 31 games and those that did not have importance. He is ready to return in Europe in order to it continues his impressive career there. And as soon as he has in his hands the official offer of Panathinaikos, he will ask Rockets that they release from the contract that he has with them. A demand which the Rockets are not compelled to listen. Whether the Rockets save their relation with one from leading internationally team that is a question which possibly can be answered only Adelman. Which as it is said is near signing with the Rockets. It is (a'llwste proponiti's??) that it gave place in the NBA in players as the Nowitskys, the Stoyacovichs, the Turkolu. It knows how it helps and it handles the players except USA and it is precisely the proponiti's that needs Spanoy'lis. With the suitable guidance he could enter in rotation on a team that needs desperately a point guard or leaves and have it go in the end to Rafer Alston!. Best I could do with Babelfish from Alta Vista
I believe that article is actually referencing THIS poll....... Oh, and if V-Span quits on the Rockets after one tough year, I will officially flip to the other side. You got to gut it out my man ! DD
I don't understand why he would want to return to his old club.I mean it's PAO. It's like they give you a Ferrari and you opt for a bicycle (alex, flame on ). I'd like him to stay with the Rockets but IF he returns to Greece I hope he has gotten attached to the Red and White and makes a much wiser decision about his future.
He would go back because he gets to play there and he is a proven superstar in Europe. He plays for the love of the game. He would much rather win and contribute than make money in the nba and not play a lick. Hopefully he'll get some time next year.
