I just get the feeling that JVG wants a point guard that is defense oriented and is a leader. Fisher always looked like a leader with the Lakers. I don't like Fishers stats. He had a horrible shooting year last year; but he has been decent in his career. I'd just like a guy who would make anyone pay for double teaming off of him. Because point guards will be double teaming Yao and McGrady. That means "Wide open shots".
Just remembered that the Rox jsut got to see a lot of Fisher in the playoffs. cthat series could definitely have swayed them one way or the other.
Fisher is not spectacular, but I have seen him hit big shots on occasion. He's not a playmaker (hence not as many assists), but he wasn't called upon to do that -- and I don't believe he will be here either. His job will be to take care of the ball and not get in the way of Yao and T-Mac, which I believe he'll do pretty well.
...because he may possess some intangibles like Championship playoff experience and leadership? Oh yea, he also hits big shots... Who cares if he flops, as long as we get the calls, right? Albiet Lue has some experience, but I'd really like to see the Rockets go after BB or Snow...Fisher would be a great fit too....
because he is a veteran and have playoff experienced...and like someone on this board said it before..he knows how to play with a big man...heck...it will be like playing with shaq and kobe again...a YOUNG shaq and kobe that is ...so what if he flops...as long as he gets the call
oh yeah...and he is a catch and shoot player..another player who we don't need to waste clock time dribbling the ball....
He doesn't get many assists bc Kobe was the one always handling the possesions. Also, does the triangle offense produce many assists? Not sure, but looking at the Bulls, there was no real PG there. With this team, I'm sure TMAC will play the role of Kobe and handle most of the possesions. It's just Fisher's job to make the open shots when TMAC and YAO create them for him.
Fisher is a very smart player and not a ballhog like others, i really want to see him in Rocks uniform!
Championship experience is definitely a plus. However let's review the situation in totality: Salary: What is he worth. Lue makes $1.65 million. Fisher will probably want 4 years at around $16 million. Age: By the 3rd or 4th year, he'll be a bench player and salary cap fodder. He is already only a borderline starter. Ability: His best attribute is he's played with Shaq and Kobe. People talk about his on-the-ball defense. Yeah right. Plenty of people blow right past him or shoot right over him. He gets some calls from flopping because he's slow and his body's out of position. Part of the reason he gets calls is because he plays for the Lakers. The Lakers always gets calls. The older he gets, the less he'll get those calls. He's a streaky shooter, mediocre passer and does not do anything exceptional. So how much do you want to pay for veteran leadership? That's the question.
Whether its true or not, Fish would be a perfect PG for the Rox. - Fisher is still a good shooter, especially in the clutch. - Despite his size, Fish is one of the peskiest defenders in the NBA - Knows how to play with stars, a dominant big man and a scoring SG, sound familiar? Knows how to use them for his benefit. - Would probably come cheaper than Barry, Hudson, and would definitely be cheaper than Snow.
Fisher has experience and toughness, but he's getting old and can't guard quicker 1s. Lue is younger, cheaper and quicker. Lue can shoot as well as Fisher and played great defense against the Answer in the playoffs a few years ago. Fisher looked good because of Kobe and Shaq, he was useless when he couldn't get open shots in the finals. Fisher will be a nice addition due to his toughness and experience but the Rockets shouldn't overspend on him by giving him full MLE or anything close to it, or give him contracts more than 3 years.
He would definately help replace Francis' hustle from the PG position. I'm hesitant about overpaying for him though. If he wants to come so badly, I say lowball him a little bit. It should also be noted that Fisher helped shut down parker in games 2-6 against the spurs this year. Yes, he could not do crap against Parker when his teammates played no help D whatsoever, but when they played as a team, they were able to shut him down.
Once he leaves the Lakers (aka Dick Bavetta's favorite team), those great defensive plays will suddenly turn into blocking fouls. Funny how that works. NO long-term contract.
as long as it is not a 5 year fat contract, it is not too bad. $16M 3-year sounds Ok to me. I would rather have Barry for a 3-year contract though.
Ok, I'm sick of people knocking Fisher because his 3pt % was low last year, and he only averages 3 assists. Why was his 3 point % low? He was moved to the bench, and really didn't get into the offense that much. Someone pointed out that he is 37% career from downtown, and I expect he'd get at least that high with the Rockets. Fisher will hit the open three consistently, and more importantly he can hit the clutch three. Why does he only average 3 APG throughout his career? I'm no expert on the triangle offense, but the PG does not get many assists. Fisher would bring the ball up court, but then give it to Kobe to set up the offense. Shaq also got quite a few assists for a big man. Is he good defensively? This is more opinion based, but I believe he is above average. I have confidence that JVG will turn him into an even better defender. Fisher is the absolute best PG option for this team. Before he was even available, I was thinking during the playoffs that it would be nice if the Rockets had him. And that was before the trade when we didn't even need a PG. Some reasonable numbers I think we can expect: 12 ppg 5 apg ~40% threes More importantly, he can hit the big shot and provide some veteran leadership. I think with Fisher, Howard, Mo Taylor, Lue, and hopefully Boki we have the pieces in place.
This is the part I have a problem with. So if all he has ever done as a Laker is bring the ball up the court and hand it to Kobe, what makes Fishers special, I think I can do that. WIthout the "Fishers played with Kobe and SHaq", no part of his game stands out above any other pg FA out there. The only convincing thing is his playoff performances, and his ability to hit "clutch" shots. Well, that ain't enough because i want a more consistent shooter, period. Plus, I don't want a flopper on defense. I want a guard who will stick to opposing pg and not let him get by, not fall on the floor and pray that the whistle blows. In all honesty, I'd rather have Lue start then Fisher, because at least Lue will play hard nosed defense. ANyone remember him guarding Iverson in the finals, that is the defense I want for PG.
