"- first of all the buy out of Richmond seems to be $10M rather than the $5M that had been mentioned in several threads."

aelliott, the read I got from that article was that 10 mil would be the total. The buyout amount would be 5 mil each season left on his contract for 2 yrs, totaling to 10 mil. Am I misinterpreting something?

Also, do we have a firm answer yet on what would happen if the Lakers or someone else sign Mitch for their 4.5 mil exception? My understanding with Maloney was that we owed him whatever his contract stated for instance 2.5 mil. However, if some other team signed him off waivers for 1 mil, our cap would only reflect 1.5 mil. Is this not accurate?

    MManal,

Talking about waivers and Richmond appears not to be the same thing.

I have no doubt about one thing: if a player clears waiver, the new team can sign them for the minimum. The original team is obligated to pay the rest.

This isn't the same thing as Richmond if he has a buyout close for option yrs. In that event, doesn't he just become a free agent. However, while I am not 100% sure what a contractual Buyout Clause can entail regarding the salary obligations of any team that picks him up after a buyout, I can assure you of one thing 100%, Wash gets a salary hit cap equal to the buyout price spread over the remaining yrs REGARDLESS of what any other team pays him!

    MManal,

If the Wizards buy out Richmond, then he's a free agent. At that point, he's no different than any other free agent. Washington's cap gets hit with the buyout amount, but Richmond signing with another team doesn't affect Washington's cap.

Maloney was a different case because we waived him, but his contract was still binding (since it was guarenteed). What Washington can do is exercise an early buy out option (written into the contract) and terminate the deal. So, once the buy out happens, Richmond's contract is done and Washington has no further obligation or ties to him.
