i know this is a noob question but how is it that we have a better record than Utah, houston has a 41 20 and utah has a 40 22. but thay have utah in the 4th spot. how is that?
Utah is leading their division, so they automatically get a top 4 seed, but home court advantage in the playoffs will be based on record.
because the stupid David Stern system makes sure that the division winners are in one of the top 4 spots - record notwithstanding
Someone should seriously Sticky a thread like this. Utah is guaranteed a 4th seed because they are a division leader.
because they lead their division. the three division leaders and the team with the next best record are ranked in the 1-4 seeds according to their records. so basically a division leader cannot be seeded lower than 4th.
And the reason for this system is to make sure that there is more competition amongst the 6 divisions, resulting in a more competitive league overall. I think its crapola!!!
Utah is leader in its division. First 4 spots are taken by division leaders n then better records starts from 5th. Rockets are 2 in its division but got better record than Dallas, Phoenix n Golden State so they r 5th. I personally think its not fair way to do the standings but thats what it is.
wow how many of these threads have we had lately? especially after last year's people would hopefully know by now the division rule
Clutch should have an Over/Under on stuff like this every year. Make clutchfans a gamblling/rockets fan site.
so, if we get home court, what's the advantage for utah being the 4th seed... i suppose that would only help a division leader in a case where the team had a record so bad that it would not be in the playoffs at all?
http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=144137 http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=144229 STOP MAKING A THREAD FOR THIS EVERYTIME...GEEZ. ok i am calm..whew. Top 4 Seeds = 3 Division Winners + Next Best Record out of Remaining teams. 5-8 = everybody else and their mama. This was done to prevent #1 and #2 seed from playing before the WCF which was what happened with dallas and san antonio 2 years ago.
For hypothetical purposes, imagine the standings (in order of best record) looked like this: 1. San Antonio (58-24) 2. Los Angeles (57-25) 3. New Orleans (55-27) 4. Houston (53-29) 5. Phoenix (52-30) 6. Utah (51-31) 7. Dallas (50-32) 8. Denver (49-33) Since Utah would be the best team in the Northwest Division, they would get the 4th seed instead of the 6th. They still wouldn't have home court advantage, but in theory it's supposed to make it easier for them to advance. Hopefully that helps you understand how it can help them out.
