Can people stop complaining about our PG's on the PnR?

It's not always their fault. The point of a pick is to create space for the dribbling guard to operate. What it means is that the screener and the guard are both using the the PnR correctly.

What it also means that it's not always our guard's fault when it comes to those type of plays. To guard the PnR effectively the guard also need the big/or whoever to to help whether it's a hedge or whatever. Help side needs to step up as well.

Look at how Lin and Harden use the PnR - They almost ALWAYS successfully get their defender stuck on the screen, yet more often than not (at least in this Portland game) their driving lanes were quickly closed off by the big or by help defense coming from somewhere else on the floor.

tl,dr - stop complaining about our guards getting stuck on screens. everyone gets stuck on screens. It's commitment to team defense (confusion possibly) and other factors that aren't getting it done.

PG (singular), they only complain when it's Lin. The few that point out Bev has the same problem are LOF, and should be burned.

Honestly it seems like the Rockets have no plan on how to defend the pick and roll. The Blazers on the other hand have a very clear plan; they ice the pick and roll and are content to give up the mid range jumper but under no circumstances give up threes or a shot inside the paint. For a team like the Rockets who don't like to shoot that mid range shot even if they're open, this is problematic. Numerous times this game, I saw a Rocket's ball handler pump fake the 3 off a pick and roll, take a dribble inside the arc, and instead of shooting the open mid range shot or trying to drive the lane they would just pass it back out to the perimeter. Harden was the only one I noticed that would be willing to take the mid range J.

Finally some basketball sense up in this piece. Many people here don't know or don't care to learn that the point of a pick is to screen out the on ball defender. I often hear, he should fight through the screen as if its really possible. You basically have two choices as the on ball defender, you go over or under the screen that's it. The 3rd option which is really a bad option is to switch. However this creates a mismatch and the results can be worse than giving up a jumper on the screen.

The only true way to stop a pnr is for the help defense to pick up the ball handler and the pick man to deny the pass on the roll. Other than that there's isn;t much one can do. This is the reason why the Spurs are so tough to beat. They execute their plays extremely well, even when their opponent knows their plays. Great post.

the defense coach is the problem. he either doesnt know how to adapt different strategy to defend it, or he simply cant coach his players to execute it. Kevin Sampson is the scrub, he is not a good defense coach not to mention head coach.

On the flip side, The PnR is such a simple, fundamental and effective play (partly proved by how much trouble we have with it), why don't we run that more?! Why?! I didn't keep count, but I don't think we do that more than a dozen times in a game? That's waaaay too few!

No team would let their best playmaker come off the bench.

Yay someone that knows how basketball works.

Yes, the PnR defense by the bigs is awful most of the time.
Im especially disappointed by Dwight's not gonna lie, I wasn't expecting him to be this bad at it.

But they knows it's a problem, I've seen Patrick get on Dwight because of it and Chandler has said the bigs need to do a better job at calling out screens, etc.
They're working on it, just have a long way to go.

Do we have any plan at all for any aspect of the game?

The lack of a plan counts as a plan.

TJohns was horrible on p&r defense last night. It has to be the coach if one of your starter was that bad.

There is a plan. Asik is by far our best PnR defending big.

And you see that when he comes out and hedge picks hard, and is mobile enough to still get back into the paint.

This isn't about a plan but How the big plays and How they are asked to play.

    Watch this video.

Pay attention to Omer's feet, positioning and mobility -- how far he roams out of the paint, how he funnels his man either to the baseline or away from the basket, how he moves to try to stay in front of his man and square to his opponent, how on the single PnR play how he not only hedges hard, but quickly rotates with his man and doesn't demand a switch, and how rarely he "jumps" but instead keeps his feet planted and does a straight up and down shot contest.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0IFNcYpKzg

As a defensive big, Omer has stronger fundamentals than Howard when it comes to post and help defense. He lacks Dwight's strength, raw athleticism and shot blocking ability, but makes up for it in sound defensive play and awareness on the floor.

Now think back to the games with Howard... it looks completely different. It doesn't make Asik a better defender, but I believe he's faster, more mobile, and fundamentally more skilled.

it requires a lot more than the will to run the PNR. As the PG goes, Lin/Harden is far from the level of Nash/Paul/Rondo. OTOH, DH is not as good as Amare/Duncan as the big man. Oh, the current Rockets coaching is also non-imaginative to say the least. So, the outcome as is is expected.

Players creating space isn't the issue, it's going under screens on exceptional 3 point shooters that gets it.
