I would absolutely agree its the better way to negotiate. Only reason I mention it is from the past Morey has used the bargaining position of RFA to his advantage with the Lowry contract and a few others. It seems like they do like to go that route if they can.
Paying your dues is all part of the real world (for most of us). I am sure most of us have worked for a lot less money than we deserved to get paid (if we still don't). Also, he is 24, he makes more money a year than some people will make in 30 years. Parsons should use this as inspiration to excel and show people why he should've been taken in the lottery. We all like the guy, but I promise you when he fell into the 2nd round he was more than happy to get the contract that he has now (better than those who were undrafted FAs)
The day when the likes of T-Mac, Moochie Norris, Mo Taylor, Kelvin Cato, etc. etc. etc. start giving back to Les all the money they didn't earn, is the day I would agree with your position.
I see. I think you are right and the Rockets would risk losing him in the same manner that Cleavland lost Boozer several years ago.
All will be answered soon. I just finished a draft of a blog entry giving a comprehensive look at Chandler Parsons's contract. It answers most/all of the issues being discussed here. May be up today or tomorrow.
if Parsons plays well and the Rockets really wants to keep him, they can always decline his 4th year option and extend a QO to make him a RFA, then his choices will be the same as a 1st rounder after the rookie contract expiration. He can take the 1-year QO (which will be for peanuts), or make the big bucks immediately as a RFA.
Are you saying that he has one of those "unguaranteed if waived" contracts for trading flexibility instead of actual options? The Rockets' leverage for the RFA scenario is still effectively the same though: With Parsons' consent, they can forego the 4th year so he gets his money one year earlier, but as a RFA. If Parsons wanted to become a UFA after the 4th year instead, even if the Rockets had a 4th year option they could decline, Parsons could simply take the 1-year QO and become a UFA anyway. Alright then, will wait for the details...
So the Rox should be totally fine with the players getting money they didn't earn, but then should needlessly renegotiate the salary for a player who's outperforming his contract? See any problems with your logic?
No. A guy who's just collecting paychecks is a tragedy by the system but I wouldn't hold it over a guy who's working hard and due to be paid.
Blog entry is up. New thread is stickied at the top of the GARM (for now). Enjoy, and try to stay awake through the whole thing.
Funny you say that, Lin's contract as an undrafted FA, are almost the same 3rd, 4th, 5th year contracts of a #3 draft pick max player.
