Those players on your list demand double teams a lot, where Lin does not. Although they turns ball over a lot, those player can still create something out of nothing. For Lin, when the defense pressure is on, the only stats is increasing is his TOs. So far, this might be the biggest area I wish Lin can improve on.

Old article by Robert Ayer of MIT

    http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/story/2012-03-02/ssac-sloan-sports-analytics-conference-new-york-knicks-jeremy-lin

    High-scoring, high-assist, high-turnover point guard: Jeremy Lin

Multi-faceted, high scoring wing, with high assists for his position and a great 3-point shooter: James Harden

    A dominant center: Dwight Howard

if the rockets are still a .500 team 20-25 games in, then yeah... either the math is wrong, the inherent assumption of correct calculation is wrong, or there is a major talent and/or coaching problem...

Too bad McHale doesn't allow all 3 to play together.

Let's not forget that a significant factor is the time to develop chemistry.

Players need reps to learn each other's game. They also need a stable roster so that they can build upon those reps.

The Heat took half the season to find their rhythm, and didn't even start looking really good until the 2nd half of their 2nd season together.

No matter the talent, it just takes time to build a truly cohesive team.

That doesn't let the talent or coaching off the hook of course, but even with a great coach this is just going to take time.

Analytics doesn't take defense into account for the most part (and even then the best one, RAPM really only defines system fit).

And James and Jeremy have been taking turns sucking it up on that side, offensively, it's not Lin whose outside shooting will regress to the mean (still better than last year's, the consistency of form is just so much better), but Harden's (upwards) as well, and the offensive output being churned out by those 3 has been extremely good even this early.

The big three: harden, Lin, and Howard. Next step is to get a coach that will maximize their potential.

I also believe Morey knows who the real big three are, and that's why I believe parsons may be expendable should the right deal come along. I speculate he is also biding his time to get rid of Mchale, who values the eye test more than Morey's precious analytical.

    Very interesting article.

Not yet a big 3. Jeremy still has alot to prove this season. He has to be more consistent to be considered a star.

high turnover is consider an asset?

But other than the 09 Orlando, which other team have a 1,2/3,5 combo?
closes I could think of is Magic, Worthy and Abdul-Jabbar.

But Worthy is not a high assist wing, and Abdul - Jabbar is no longer dominant big.

If you consider Duncan as a center, then that would be a good 1,2,5 combo.

Actually looking back, the most successful trio position wise would be the 2,3,4 combo.
From Jordon, Pippen and Rodman, to Allen, PP and KG and the current big 3 of Wade, Lebron and Bosh.

Dwight's not dominant offensively, so that kills this plan.

This is assuming Lin maintains what he's done so far. I doubt 14 ppg counts in his analysis as a high scoring guard.

guys...Lin is putting up over 18ppg as a reserve...he's tied with KD for first in points per shot, his efficiency numbers are elite, why isn't that something worth celebrating? Every potentially positive thread turns into a LOH v LOF b**** fest...

Ayer's paper has the following statistical breakdown for a Cluster 7 player (high scoring, high assist, high turnover PG). Those numbers don't seem beyond reach for Lin.

    Cluster 7
    16.46 points per game
    4.18 rebounds per game
    8.46 assists per game
    2.06 steals per game
    0.30 blocks per game
    3.18 turnovers per game

    Lin's numbers last year
    13.4 points
    3.0 rebounds
    6.1 assists
    1.6 steals
    0.4 blocks
    2.9 turnovers

Lin's numbers this year (before Knicks game)
    18.1 points
    2.4 rebounds
    4.9 assists
    1.4 steals
    0.4 blocks
    4.0 turnovers
