this isn't long before that, but this is really sickening imo when hutchinson realized she was getting blasted, why she didn't talk about this is mind boggling, i understand people in this state love the death penalty, but you got no other cards to play
emminent domain - is that conservative? foreign owned toll roads - is that conservative? trans-texas corridor - is that conservative? forced vaccinations - is that conservative? perrys former chief of staff is also a lobbyist for merck, which makes the hpv vaccine advocating secession accepting endorsement of palin tyler willingham case
Interesting, thanks. I support the death penalty in theory, but in practice is another story. Could the issues with the HPD crime lab re: botched DNA tests hurt Bill White in any way or is this something that has nothing to do with him?
White pretty much has my support based on what he's done for Houston, and what I think he's done amounts to progress, so I'd be interested to hear the other side. Just looking for some specifics on them both, so thanks.
This is Perry's gameplan. He's gonna play to the 2nd amendment nuts due to White's association with the Mayors Against Guns. Also, I'm sure we'll hear all about Houston being a "sanctuary city" and how Mr. White is cool with illegals killing HPD cops. when this goes down, we will learn more about this race because nothing is beneath this fella Rick Perry.
Clayton's comment on the weather certainly didn't help his cause, but I think Ann would have won whether he said that or not.
Perry, whose primary goal is favoring the rich who will fund his campaign advertising, will act like he is in favor of the little guy and the teabaggers, toothless and all, will fall for it like a ton of bricks. The racists, the immigrant haters and queer haters know he is there guy. Palin will come down and accuse White of being a communist since he is a Democrat like Obama, so what is the difference. I would hope Texas has advanced a bit in the last twenty years, but I'm not hopeful.
Sadly, you are probably correct. Way too many mouth breathing, knuckle draggers that will fall for that line of bs.
I can't wait for the inevitable Palin appearance and subsequent s***storm it will cause on this board.
I remember almost clear as day. He was trouncing her. The political environment back then in Texas just wasn't in her favor for a lot of reasons. Her election was a complete fluke. Even after this and a couple of other gaffes, she still barely beat him.
thank you, again, he was winning going away. the more i think the more i'm shocked that he lost, even with that statement.
wiki , that's all i got unfortunately Williams began his run for governor of Texas as a Republican. He defeated a field of candidates for the nomination that included former U.S. Representative and outgoing Railroad Commissioner Kent Hance of Lubbock, Clements' former Secretary of State Jack Rains of Houston and Dallas lawyer Tom Luce.[citation needed] Williams spent freely from his personal fortune, running a "Good Old Boy" campaign initially appealing to conservatives.[2] Prior to a series of gaffes, he was leading Richards (the race was dubbed "Claytie vs. The Lady"[citation needed]) in the polls and was in striking distance of becoming only the second Republican governor of Texas since Reconstruction.[citation needed] In one of his widely-publicized missteps, Williams refused to shake hands with Ann Richards in a public debate, an act seen as uncouth. Senator John Tower had similarly refused to shake the hand of Democratic opponent Robert Krueger in a 1978 appearance in Houston but went on to win a fourth term by the narrowest of margins. During the campaign, Williams publicly made a joke likening rape to bad weather, having quipped: "If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it".[3] Also, during the campaign, allegations were made that as an undergraduate at Texas A&M, Williams had visited the Chicken Ranch, a brothel in La Grange, and the Boy's Towns of Mexico.[4][5] He further offended some citizens when he urged Hispanic Americans to support his candidacy because he met Modesta in a Mexican restaurant.[citation needed] As a result of his reported comments, Williams was occasionally parodied, such as in the mock political ad, "Satan Williams," which appeared on Dallas/Fort Worth public television during the 1990 campaign season.[6] Despite these political snafus, Williams only narrowly lost the election to Ann Richards, who actually polled under 50 percent of the raw vote possibly because of the presence of a Libertarian nominee.[citation needed] At his defeat on election night, Texas television stations showed the glib Williams telling his supporters in Austin: "I've got some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that we lost; the good news is that it is not the end of the world." When the crowd urged him to try again in four years, he told his supporters, "I may be an Aggie, but I am not crazy."
Don't forget that he won his current term with a whopping 37% of the vote. It's not like he had some huge mandate for the last 4 years.
This is why I wanted Medina to get enough votes to at least get a runoff since she's was catering to the same teabaggers that Perry was trying to get for the past year or so. But she imploded on Glenn Beck's show (a Perry supporter - what a suprise) and that's that (would be awesome if she pulls a Kinky and goes in as an independent). Have to hope, if Bill White gets elected, means Texas isn't as backwater as the rest of the nation makes us out to be. Trans-Texas corridor alone should have Perry getting the boot.
Bill White had a tremendous record of accomplishment while mayor of Houston, a city hard to please (as we know!), which is why he was reelected by huge margins, more than once, but you asked about Perry. Some other time, maybe. Did I give you a little idea of what's been going on?
Yes, Ann won by a hair, but she won and in a far more difficult race, in my opinion. An example of those cranky, unpredictable Texas voters, who don't always do what conventional wisdom can lead people to expect them to do.
Yeah but she won a difficult race that she frankly shouldnt have won. Williams made George Allen's dumb comment seem like nothing with the amount of just sheer idiocy he demonstrated. The comment about comparing rape to weather was obviously bad but on top of that he was caught visiting prostitutes, and made multiple racist comments about hispanics and african americans along the way. The guy was a flat out bozo and Richards winning by such a slim margin is in my mind a testament to how conservative texas can be rather than the potential for texas voters to deviate from the norm. Williams wouldve been flat out demolished in most states for what he did. The fact that he even came close to winning is frankly embrassing if you ask me.
