http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/3024360.stm Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe has died after collapsing during an international match in France, world football's governing body Fifa has confirmed. The 28-year-old fell to the ground unchallenged in the 72nd minute of a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon. He was treated on the pitch before being stretchered off and receiving further treatment, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and extra oxygen. Foe spent last season on loan at English club Manchester City from French club Olympique Lyon and also played for RC Lens. Medical staff are believed to have tried to restart his heart for 45 minutes but without success. "This is a very sad day for football for Fifa and for the player's family, this is all we can say at the moment," said a FIFA spokesman. "Given this situation neither coach Winfried Schaefer of Cameroon or Colombia's Francisco Maturana will be speaking to the media." Cameroon won the match 1-0 but that will pale into insignificance after the news of Foe, who had played more than 60 games for his country. An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of his death. Foe played under manager Harry Redknapp while at West Ham. Redknapp said: "You couldn't meet a nicer, more fantastic person than Marc Foe. "He was a special boy - I just can't believe it." France and Turkey were contesting the other final which took place after Cameroon's win and the match was preceded by the image of Foe on the stadium's big screen and a minute's silence. --- RIP
That's the saddest part of the story. I just heard on the TV that his mother, wife and three kids were actually at the game. Just horrible.
oh, wow...i was watching part of that game at the mexican food restaurant near my office over lunch...i didn't see this happened until now. how sad....
I could not believe this. Very tragic. Great loss, both as a player and person. He was a model citizen and professional from what I have read... RIP.
Being a former expat in Cameroon(parents still live there) this tragedy hurts me even more.I didn't know the guy personely but I had met him once. His death is do to a cerebral problem which I don't know how to translate in English: rupture of something.... Very very sad... ALA
i remember an incident in 1992 when the star soccer player on my high school team (he was a freshman and better than everyone) collapsed on the field and his heart ruptured. he passed away later that day. it devastated the team and the school. RIP to this man, his team, and his country
