Then why ever play Holiday? He is not a team player and absolutely sucks at defense. He is a good 3 pt shooter on very low volume. It doesn't make up for being hunted constantly on defense and playing hog ball. Tate and Cam both should be getting minutes if your alternative is Holiday.
We didn't have minutes for Cam to start the season. I know injuries blurred that situation but there was never going to be minutes for him. Sengun/Adams Jabari/Tari Brooks/Amen Green/Whitmore FVV/Amen/Holiday Just think and be fair, how was he ever going to get more than 10 minutes behind Green? All other positions have a minutes shortage, so it's more likely one of Brooks/Tari/Amen will eat Whitmore minutes. He had to have a big start and be shocking to win minutes. Just didn't happen. He'll be back and figure it out.
Cam had minutes at the beginning of the season but he flamed out spectacularly. Rockets have been fair to him but his very low bball IQ, attitude and refusal to play within his ability hold him back.
Yes within the context of our team we technically gave him minutes, but those were not significant minutes. He shat the bed too quickly. In October and November combined, he got more than 10 minutes just 3 times. More than 20 minutes only one time. We quickly shelved him because, well, we're f*cking good and he sucked. He was shooting literally like 5% from 3PT range (21 attempts). Overall this season, he's absolutely horrendous in transition. He doesn't do anything else well so what did he expect? IMO it's just maturity and the unwillingness to adapt to a situation where we don't need a hero. I don't believe this is an IQ or talent issue. Cam is not a bball IQ guy like a Sengun or Harden, he's a "feel" guy more like a Durant or Melo or Lou Williams or Jamal Crawford. That's fine, we need all the types. All of that can be remedied, Udoka has shown he can fix that stuff. What Udoka can't fix is his attitude. Only a therapist can do that. Phil Jackson knew everything you could know about motivation, but he couldn't do that. That's more hard-coded than a basketball coach can deal with. He complained publicly faster than any of the 10 players we drafted in the first round. He has sulked more than the entire core combined, I've never seen Amen or Tari or Jabari or Jalen or Sengun sulk for long. Sheppard's not there yet but I guarantee he won't do that. >> this is totally antithetical to the Udoka identity. Everyone eats. Team players. Defense. Loose balls. These things earn shots. If Udoka needs a shooter with no defense, Holiday is a flat out better shooter. That to me is the big red flag. Mysterious incidents like this last DNP make me paranoid that there's more attitude issues. No one can tell me Udoka is not patient. He let Green take a million stupid threes. He kept patient with him. He rounded out his game. If Cam is working as hard as Green behind the scenes, then what's going on? I also just flat out don't want to see his f*cking face sulking on the bench anymore when I watch games. He's such a ****ing downer especially when you see him sitting among the most committed basketball players in the NBA with that look. Gosh I love Cam's game and a big fan of his talent, but there's very few things I dislike about humans more than a lack of drive. And I get that when players dunk hard and act tough that can simulate drive, but actually drive is what happens when no one is watching. Drive happens in the dark times and the good times, when you get benched and when you're starting, in private and in public, drive is drive. That's the thing you can control and can't blame anyone for. Look at this age, big changes in attitude are still realistic. Hell he could put up 30 tonight. But this season is so disappointing, we could really use a reliable backup SG who can drain 3's. It's a shame this is not an easy call for Udoka.
Cam doesn't seem to have the greatest attitude but I think he also has a bad case of resting b!itch face which doesn't help.
With the way it’s going, I don’t think he’ll be here next season and I don’t blame him if he decides on leaving for his personal benefit
If only we could do, "Let's make a deal!" We need something. How about a short point guard with a beard?
Maybe coach said to him, "Promise me you don't just think of shooting out there and I'll let you play."
I miss aggresive Cam. Passive Cam doesn't do it for me. Impassive Cam does it even less. If Cam cares, I really hope he can start playing like we know he can. I'm not giving up on him yet
The idea of Cam Whitmore is so much better than the actual player is or ever will be. He could easily still carve out a career as a solid rotation player, I just don't see anything from him to suggest his absurd physical tools will ever translate to greatness. He's a bull in a China shop..or he's invisible. There's just no flow to his game.
Players like Cam build flow throw reps on bad teams. Green and Sengun got to experience that and develop that flow. I mean it simply might be better for Cam's career if he gets traded to a bad team lacking guard or wing depth where a young pretty high ceiling plyer can get some decent usage. People can say the Silas years were a waste but there is something to be said for Green and Sengun getting a lot of on ball reps attacking point of attack set defenses building that muscle memory to maintain a flow and have some amount of control and pace.
Cam needs a developmental coach. Ime and this staff can’t do it. He’s not going to learn on the ropes. He’d probably be better off in Utah or Portland…
¿? All our young players have improved under this coaching staff. They have proven to be excellent developmental coaches.
He is regressing hard. Complete negative if he’s not in the open court. Really need to start considering moving him in the offseason
