Jalen Green btw has the highest usage on this team offensively, has one of the worse individual high volume scoring efficiencies in the league yet has the second highest on/off impact on team offensive efficiency only behind FVV.

    https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/team/11/onoff#tab-team_efficiency

I bring up usage because the higher usage you have the less of a fluke your on/off impact on offense is.

So how is it that someone with such poor individual offensive efficiency has the second highest impact on tean offensive efficiency only behind FVV

I missed the game yesterday but even if he dribbled the ball off his knee for a turnover 14 times in that game it doesn’t erase the large sample size of evidence that we have that the dude can play and has immense talent.

Whether he ends up being just a Gerald Green type of scorer off the bench or a perennial all star is still a question and nobody should be surprised that that hasn’t been answered yet.

The difference between a prospect and a superstar at his position with his profile is nothing but performance. We’ll have no idea if he’s a star or not unless he makes game winning plays this season and puts the team on his game in clutch situations to win games.

Still looking forward to seeing if the guy can make the case for the Rockets to not just use him as a scorer off the bench but maybe consider featuring him as a starter to replace Brooks and have some of the offense run through him.

FYI Eason, and Amen are also in the same boat talent and opportunity wise. Really looking forward to the competition to try and nudge out Brooks. If one of these three guys can do that it bodes well for their potential to eventually be a star player. If you can’t beat out Dillon Brooks… well you’re still a prospect.

Don’t quite understand your argument. I just gave an example of how they are different players. Why does what segment of the season matters? It happened whether you like it or not.

The fact that Green has other abilities and attributes and contributes in other ways than scoring was on display in the game I used as an example. Whether you agree or not the fact was teams did double and trap Green last season. When he wasn’t trapped he still drew defenses with his dribble drive ability and made plays as opposed to Cam who is not a playmaker. Also Green makes more plays off the screen and roll which Cam doesn’t play likely since he isn’t a good passer or playmaker.

If you do not think so then present your assessment and rationale instead of referring to the Lord. What’s the definition of average? That’s subjective in itself. My comment wasn’t even analyzing Green’s overall performance as a SG. it was about his abilities and contributions versus Cam’s.

Cam shot 46% from the field and 36% from 3 his rookie year. All of his warts showed up during this SL game and it's good for him to reflect on it. I'll worry when he's in his 3rd year doing this same **** like someone else on the team.

I really like Cam’s midrange game, where he takes off from 10’ for a slam.

It’s a lot more efficient than shooting from 10’.

Jalen Green needs to worry about himself. Whatever replacement that exists for him if the team believes he isn't "the one" is not on this team. To explain how Cam will not be the replacement for Green just look at their respective rookie seasons.

Both Green and Cam have the exact same rookie adjusted scoring efficiency at 97 ts+(normal distribution around 100 mean, akin to IQ).

But Green did it on 50% unassisted rate vs Cam at 30%. So Green had the same scoring efficiency as Cam but doing it on self creation at almost twice the rate.

And then there is the fact that Jalen Green will never average more turnovers than assists like Cam. This summer league stint tells me Cam most likely will average more turnovers than assists this following season also.

So ya, Green needs to be on his toes and be consistent so he isn't traded. But not because Cam is waiting in the wings for his spot.

If this franchise believes Cam is Jalen Green insurance, id be very afraid of the future of this team.

Jalen Green insurance at the moment is if he doesn't pan out by the as break, hope his trade value is still good enough to attach some picks with him to get someone like Mitchell or Booker.

Not sure why anyone would classify Cam as “insurance”. Either he gets good enough to nudge out a starter or he doesn’t and that’s all based on performance.

Also as I mentioned before, Brooks is the most likely starter to get moved to the bench anyways so I don’t know why it’s always a Cam vs Jalen debate. Maybe it will be in a few months if it turns out that way but the most immediate thing to watch is whether Cam, Amen, or Eason can make it an obvious choice to start and feature them in the starting rotation for Brooks. If Jalen is moved to the bench for some reason that’s probably more of a Jalen problem than an endorsement of one of the prospects. Maybe both at the same time but unlikely. If Jalen craps the bed enough to get demoted it’s likely bad news for the Rockets in general.

Still they could trade Jalen at some point but I don’t think that would happen at this point because of confidence in Cam being a better player longterm. Again I think it would either be an indictment on Jalen in a vacuum (bad news for Rockets) or an opportunity to snag a star in a trade … which probably means nothing in regards to opportunities for Cam. A Jalen trade might actually signal less opportunity for Cam to be a starter if it’s a star like Jimmy Butler, etc. who will be the feature of the offense and play heavy minutes at his position.

Depends on what you are looking for and how you assess him. To me He seemed to have improved getting into the paint and drawing fouls, scoring or making plays when he’s in there.

The numbers back this up. His less than 5ft and restricted area FG% both increased. Especially RA (61%) which is where he needs to be as all dominant scoring guards have had at least 60% FG% in the RA.

His FG% on drives increased. His assist% on drives increased. His SF and FT freq% on handoffs also increased as he was in 68 percentile last year in those categories.

Pretty simple. Cam aint no SG. Can’t even run a proper pick and roll. Doesn’t make plays for others.

Neither was Jaylen Brown who's his main comp. Cam as a rookie was a better rebounder and defender than Brown was in his rookie year. It takes time. They all take time. All you want to do is see progress. Cam and Reed are the two young guys full of potential. Whether they maximize their potential is yet to be seen but the early returns are promising. My main issue with Cam yesterday was his visible frustration and his shot not falling. There are players that disappear when their offense isn't clicking and I'm hoping Cam isn't one of those guys.

Considering Brooks plays better on ball/man defense, better playmaker, and understands flow of the offense and plays within the team concept Instead of barreling thru 3 players with no open lane I would think at this point in time Brooks job is safe. Doesn’t mean Cam can’t grow. He just has a lot of work to do. I would not be surprised if he plays less minutes this year with Tari back in the mix and maybe Amen at the 3 in some sets.

I agree with you that he can grow. There’s always room for growth and players evolve. The players that last in the league are those that adapt and evolve. I certainly hope he changes his mentality because he isn’t as quick as Jaylen Brown off the dribble. Brown also has a pullup game and post allowing him to be a good iso player.

I think he needs to play another summer league game just to get that 1-15 performance out of his system. He will be fine.

The Jalen Green cult is really jumping on Cam's poor performance in his 3rd game in 4 days during the middle of summer when he's not fully in game shape, and I get why, they are afraid....and they should be.

Cam went out there and put up a Jalen Green type performance and it was disappointing to see....but I'm hoping that outing leads to him doubling up on his conditioning and learns the lesson. Same goes for Reed Sheppard, he had never played that many minutes at that kind of a level in that short a time before and even he looked bad as a result.

That said, I'm certain Cam will be fine in a more proper role once the season comes around. The Rockets have SOO many quality ball handlers between Sengun, FVV, Amen, and Reed Sheppard to where Cam will be off ball knocking down 3's and scoring on cuts to the basket rather than pulling a Jalen Green chucking and trying to go ISO....and that's a good thing. We need a shooting guard that can shoot, not one that wants to pretend they are Kobe. Cam can be that guy, but he's still got a lot of lessons to learn...which makes sense given that he's the youngest guy on the roster.

Yeah I mentioned Amen and Tari too for a reason. I actually think those two probably have a higher likelihood of actually beating out Brooks than Cam who while more explosive offensively, isn't as likely to do alot of the Brooks-type of things that's needed as a starter.

People who mention guys like Ant Edwards, or Jalen Brunson need to realize that those two guys broke into their rotations by doing alot of these things first. With the exception of like super talents like Luka or Harden with the Rockets prior, its just extremely rare for someone not to break out first by doing alot of these things just to first get into the starting lineup, then their offensive game takes off when they are featured more and more.

I'm really high on Cam's talent, but I think we cannot also forget about the potential for this to be a big year for Tari & Amen as well. Their star potential might be higher and closer to realization than some might assume. They might also both "just" be role players too, but you gotta break into the starting lineup first, and they are probably closer to being able to do that than Cam is.... by a little bit. Not a ton, but by a bit.

(also this is not a knock on Dillon Brooks either. I just think he's the weakest starter currently, but still a solid player)

That stat also has Jalen Green as the worst rotation player defensively on the Rockets, as well as the being the 2nd worst overall Rockets rotation player overall. So if you truly believe in this stat, then I guess you also believe he's one of the worst defenders in the NBA? Mind you Trae Young's defense is considered to be better than Jalen Green's by this stat.

Now, as someone who do know how these kind of stats work, I am personally fully aware of the reasoning for his grades on both ends. I just find it that you, someone who don't actually believe in most advanced stats, are using one in a cherrypicked fashion just because it suits your opinion.

Nonsense, he believes in any and all advanced or basic stats that he can twist to make it seem like Jalen is a good player.....he just doesn't believe in any of the others because they show that Jalen is terrible.

I wonder why you think it's unlikely.

What are the chances of Jalen trending down or trending up? What are the chances of the other guys having significant improvement or not much improvement? Assuming we know the answer to both questions and then calculate the probability of each of the four possible outcomes, we can see which outcome is most likely.

Honestly, I have no idea how likely those outcomes are. Let me just throw out some blind (but I think reasonable) guesses to illustrate.
    Jalen trending down: 60%
One of those guys significant improvement: 70%

Jalen down plus other guys improving: 42%
Jalen down plus other guys not improving: 18% (worst scenario for us)
Jalen up plus other guys improving: 28% (best scenario for us)
Jalen up plus other guys not improving: 12%

    My guesstimates.

What are yours? (A real question. Not a challenge.)

I believe advanced stats require context.

When you say Jalen has the second worst net on/off, you are doing what you excuse me of.

For me, the on/off impact numbers have more relevance when the players you are comparing have more similar situations. Like two starters on the same team, on/off impact has more relevance than two players on different teams or one player on the bench and the other a stater on the same team.

Jalen has a 32 percentile ranking in overall on/off. Guys like Dillon are roughly the same. Then there are some bench guys like Cam who are at 40%

Bench players play against bench rotations so things like defensive on/off impact would be inflated for a bench player. That is context. It's context there favors Jalen Green so it's context you might not like.

The only one rotation player that is an outlier is Jabari as his on/off impact is well below the rest of the rotation.

Jalen's offensive on/off impact also has a higher chance of being statistically relevant more so than his defensive impact because of his high usage(leads the team) on offense. When you lead the team in usage rate, your off esive on/off impact is least likely to be a fluke. So if your team does a lot better on offense with you on the bench, the odds are this isn't a fluke because when you are on the court, he offense runs through you a lot so you are the reason for that offense dipping a lot when you are on the court. The reverse is true for Green. His usage rate is the highest on the team so the odds of the offense dipping considerably when Green is on the bench is because of a fluke is really low.

Jalen Green however on defense isn't usually used as a point of attack defender. High usage offensive speakers usually aren't. And given the fact that our bench is constructed full of high level defensive role players because that is Ime's calling card it makes sense that Green's on/off numbers for defensive impact would be poor.
