Well, I guess just about everyone is going to be ready for the April Fools joke headline this year. This is hard to believe, but with five of his children pressing charges it doesn't look good for Murphy. From now on it looks like we might be sending him cookies in the slamer.
Man. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. I feel bad for Calvin that he has to go through this, but as one person said, the people we should be feeling for are his kids if it's in fact true. I also don't see how their could be any evidence except their word. Hope he's found innocent. Unfortunately even if he is, people will never remember him the same, like with OJ and Kobe. NOT COOPER! If Calvin were to not come back, IF ANYONE FROM THE ROCKETS IS READING THIS THREAD, NOT COOPER. NOOOOOO! I'll never be able to watch the Rockets on 51 again, at least until she's gone.
There was a bit on channel 13 news where Calvin's lawyer said these charges may be coming from the kids because they are trying to get at his late wife's teacher's retirement fund. I hope something like this is the case. I really like Calvin and I would be devastated it if these charges were true.
Call me biased, but I don't believe this for one second. I will need CONCRETE evidence that he did this, and apparently, there isn't any. People's kids can be absolutely horrific at times.
If someone needs to temp for Calvin it shouldn't be Coop or Bullard (but i would rather have the latter) it should be Van Chancellor
First, let me just say that it is EXTREMELY important that everyone here acts like a normal, respectable human being about this. This is NOT funny for anyone and none of us has enough facts in this case to pass judgement on Murphy, his kids or anyone else. So, out of respect for Calvin, his family and the Rockets, don't speculate, make bad jokes or generally act stupid regarding this. It isn't stupid and it isnt' funny. Second, this is really tough for me because I have been a fan of Murphy's since I was 8 years old. I used to carry his basketball card around with me in my wallet as a kid. The first time I actually met him was just a few years ago at an event. I've met lots of athletes, musicians and other famous people, but I've never been that nervous. He was just my hero growing up and I've always loved his outlook on life and his talents as a broadcaster. I sincerely hope that this is not true for so many reasons not the least of which is the fact that it is terrible stuff, but also because of how much respect I have for Calvin. Really, REALLY sad.
It's obvioulsy there is some truth. I mean if you are NOT quilty, you would step up right away and speak your mind with CONFIDENT but since Calvin have no comments.
This happened 15 years ago...before he started doing TV why cry now? It can only be about money...revenge Warren Moon and now Calvin Murphy...why can't revered black athletes in Houston just watch themselves... Anyway for something 15 years ago, depending on the details of the allegations and the credibility of the source I'm willing to forgive.
Really funny. See what it's like to be in their shoe IF you did get rape or molested by your own father. Maybe they were too young to defend themself and not knowing what to say or do? Or maybe not going to tell anyone or police will make them feel degraded if everyone knows? Maybe now they are confident and need to step up and make a decision so they can go on with their lives and not live with the unknown and pain inside of them and to maybe stop Calvin from molesting others if he is guilty?
The reason why I personally believe these charges are ridiculous is the same reason why I think Michael Jackson will be found innocent and the same reason why I think I R. Kelly is guilty. Child Molestors are notorious repeat offenders. Not only does Calvin have a bunch of other kids, he has had access to kids since he has been playing ball in Houston. And you mean to tell me that these five are the ones he chose to molest. Why?? Now, if some other kids come out and say that the same thing happened to them, I will be more skepital. Its the same thing with Mike, Mike has access to tons of kids through his charity, and he has been charged exactly twice, ten years apart. That just doesn't add up to me from what we know about pedophiles.
If it is true he should rot in jail, if it is BS, the girls should rot in jail. Someone is lying, and it is dispicable either way. DD
Five alleged victims, but only 3 charges? There must be limitations issues with some of the allegations. The women have to be under 28 for charges to be brought, per the 10 year statute of limitations from the date the child reaches the age of majority. If the latest of the acts took place in 1991, then the oldest the girl could have been at the time was 15. For the 1988 charge, the oldest the girl could have been was 12. We might be taking about only one girl for which the state is bringing charges (for three separate acts with one child). Evidence of the alleged conduct with the other girls would not come into evidence in the case in chief. So it could be as little as one against one, instead of five against one, come trial time. I'm banking on Calvin and Rusty Hardin beating this rap, unless they have pictures (not likely). Especially if Hardin already has witnesses lined up to say nothing happened, and if one of the girls told them nothing happened.
Chronicle article mentions that the girls want money that their mom left to Murphy. Gets more interesting. DD
I went to Stephen F. Austin for my first 1.5 years of college, and I remember meeting a girl about a year ahead of me in 1995. She said she went to high school with one of Calvin Murphy's daughters, and that Calvin was abusive toward her. She really didn't elaborate too much, but I got the impression it wasn't spankings that she was talking about. If he's guilty, thought, string him up by the nuts. I have a daughter, goddamnit, and if he did stuff like that to his kids he doesn't deserve to live. Needless to say, however, I hope that he didn't do it.
My bad - it looks like six charges. So it could be five different complainants. Still, these girls would have had to have been very young, to still be under 28. This may end up playing out like the trials against the Catholic priests. One thing is for sure - it will be a smear-fest on Calvin. He will never recover from this, even if acquited, like Hardin said.
