anyone who thinks Calvin's crime and Marv's crimes were not deserving of different treatment is crazy.....guys: think about it...I will not even go over it again...there is no comparison whether both are guilty or not....Calvin's alledged crime is level 5 evil.... Marv's was level 1 and weak level one because the facts that came out after showed that the woman had kinky relations with him before the accusations...so he went too far.... in either case, Marv's comeback was easier because of the facts of the case.....If Calvin is found innocent by courtroom, then there will always be the specter and I wonder if Les will stick by it...because facts will come out that damn him regardless of the truth... our system of justice is whacky like that....accusations of a public figure can do good in some cases (see Marv and Hugh Grant), but crimes against children, whether true or not, really are a different matter for public consumption....
I hope you're not talking to me, because I said, quote: "If Albert was able to maintain his employment status after claiming guilt, Murphy should easily be able to keep his job if completely exonerated. However, due to the severe nature of the charges, Murphy will, in all likelihood, no longer be welcomed at the Toyota Center if found guilty."
Well, the prosecuter said that a couple of them came forward, and then the others were contacted and subsequently said the same thing happened to them. If that's true, that's pretty damning evidence.
contacted in isolation? Could this not have been planned by all of the daughters involved in the matter before going to the authorities? A situation where 3 daughters come forward, but the others involved stay back, and confirm the allegations when later questioned. Sure its deviant, but possible. Sounds like an episode of "24" rather than real life though.
An update to the the story previously posted... There's a part of this story that is very graphic, and it's the first time I've read anything like this related to this story. AP Associated Press HOUSTON -- Tears streaming down his face after appearing in a courtroom Wednesday, former Houston Rockets star Calvin Murphy declared he is innocent of charges he molested five of his daughters. "I am not guilty of these charges," Murphy said, at times blotting tears with a white hand towel. "I can't emphasize that enough." The initial court appearance was to make sure Murphy understood the charges against him and he wasn't required to enter a formal plea. Murphy, 55, was a guard for the Rockets from 1970 to 1983 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. He has taken a leave of absence from his analyst duties on Rockets telecasts while he fights three charges of indecency with a child and three charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child. "Obviously, I am missing being the flamboyant commentator that I was before all this happened, but that is not important right now," he said. "What is important right now is what I am doing ... to defend myself, try to get myself exonerated and put my family back together." Murphy has 10 daughters and four sons with nine women, Harris County prosecutor Lance Long said. "You have got to remember this involves my family -- the family that I so dearly love -- and to be put in a situation like this, and to have a lot of time to think about what has occurred is a travesty for my family," Murphy said. The five daughters, now adults, claim the abuse occurred from 1988-91, according to an affidavit filed by the Texas Rangers. Murphy contends the claims by his daughters stem from family discord related to a battle over money. "My heart aches -- of course for me because I am in the spotlight -- but it really aches for my daughters, because there are reasons behind this kind of thing that will be brought out later," he said. Long said at least one daughter said she was as young as 6 when Murphy took her to a hotel room and performed oral sex on her. On another occasion, Long said, Murphy fondled one of the girls after she had moved in with him following her stepfather's death. Long said he plans to take the case to a grand jury to secure the formal indictment needed to send the case to trial, but wasn't sure how soon the case would be presented. Murphy's next court date is April 27. "Any time someone is charged with sexual abuse of a child, it is disturbing," Long said. "I think because he is well-known, or if someone is not well-known, it shouldn't make a difference. Lots of things happen in people's lives that the public doesn't always know about." Fort Bend County District Attorney John Healey said Wednesday his office has joined the investigation into Murphy, who lives in the county southwest of Harris County. Children's Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin said her agency was called to Murphy's $350,000 home March 2 to investigate possible abuse and neglect of two children who live with him. The children have not been removed from the home, but the investigation is continuing, she said. Murphy, an unlikely star from Niagara University because of his 5-foot-9 frame, averaged 17.9 points and shot 89.2 percent from the free throw line in his pro career. He was a high school star at Norwalk, Conn., before moving on to Niagara, where he was a two-time consensus All-America and led the school to a 22-7 record and an NCAA Tournament berth in 1970. Niagara athletic director Mike Hermann said Wednesday that the school had been considering expanding Murphy's prominence in its marketing campaign next year, but has put those plans on hold. Murphy was drafted in the second round in 1970 by the San Diego Rockets, who moved to Houston the following season. Murphy quickly became a fan favorite despite playing on several bad teams. His 17,949 points were a franchise high until Hakeem Olajuwon passed him. Murphy, known as the "Pocket Rocket" because of his small stature, missed just nine free throws -- and made 78 straight in one stretch -- in 1980-81 for a record single-season percentage of .958. His number hangs retired in the Toyota Center rafters.
"Murphy has 10 daughters and four sons with nine women" "'...but it really aches for my daughters, because there are reasons behind this kind of thing that will be brought out later,' he said." crazy! i think one of those wives died in 1997. How much of a noble man can you be to father fourteen children amongst nine women?
Clutch - This thread should be locked and deleted. It is easy to make accusations about anything and about anyone. Lets not turn this into a witch hunt and we certainly should not be passing judgement on him. If he indeed did to these horrible accusations then he should be punished to the full extend of the law. However, if he is admonished from guilt so be it. Let the proper people investigate and rule on this. Like everything else in this country, the media is making a spectical of this event. I just read an atroshish article in the Buffalo gossip rag that was full of inuendos and basically painted him as being guilty. It made comments such as "appearantly he lived a life we never knew..." I ask a questions, in our microwave and sound bite society will the media give him the same level of attention and band width to clean his good name if he found innocent? I think not... Lets not lower ourselvs to this level of gossip and hearsay but rather lets pray for him and his family and that justice is served. Even if he is innocent of this, his reputation will forever be tarnished and all most people will see and remember is the sound bites on the 6 o'clock news from the local dramedia station. We love you Murph and you are in our prayers....
Why? He is a former Rocket and this is a huge news story in the city of Houston. I see no reason why people who want to discuss this story should not be allowed to.
pardon my ignorance on this matter but.. how exactly do trials like these go? How is evidence so long after the event presented? Surely this is no physical evidence other than the word of those bringing the accusations or is there more than I am thinking? So I guess my question is how does their word hold up in court alone? Are there other factors that do not need physical evidence that can sway a case for the prosecution?
is it libel if there is a headline that says "Ex-NBA star molested 5 daughters"? it says that on the AIM Today thing.
robbie.. when I saw that headline it said "cops:" in front of it.. like it was saying the cops say he did. at first I thought the same thing but then I saw cops in front of it
hmm in addition to my question above about the trials would bill worrell be relieved of his broadcasting duties if calvin was going to be out longer that just the remaining of this season? or would bill worrell st ay but with another partner?
Why would Bill Worrell go anywhere. That doesn't make any sense. Someone would just replace Calvin Murphy
Yeah, although I was referring to Bill wanting to be on the air with another partner . I guess they all have to move on though. Although..... can someone explain how trials such as sexual abuse work? Surely this is no physical evidence other than the word of those bringing the accusations or is there more than I am thinking? So I guess my question is how does their word hold up in court alone? Are there other factors that do not need physical evidence that can sway a case for the prosecution?
I often wondered why one never heard anything about Murphys family. Let the ones without sin cast the first stone.
Cuz basketball games only last three hours, there wasn't time sorry thought I could bring some levity to an otherwise despicable subject, carry on
Oddson: I understand your concern over Murph and his family, but lets face it...this is absolutely rivetting and I can honestly see in this post that there has not been much gossip discussion...everyone on this board seems to be sticking to the facts as stated in the paper and launching an opinion about his guilt or innocence which is what happens at the water cooler...think of this as the water cooler for maniac rocket fans....but I see no disrespect on this board so far....facts are facts Most will never get all the facts on this because of limited access, but this is no different than any other discussion...Clutchcity posters have been very very very supportive and respectful....at least IMHO...
I don't know if Calvin Murphy is guilty or not.....but 14 kids, Jesus!!!! A one man humping machine. Wilt and Calvin. Does CM think he's on a stud farm. The world only needs one Calvin. At this rate in a hundred year there will be 1 million Calvin Murphy offsprings and in 1000 years the population of China and Murphys will be the same. The heredity of man is in jeopardy. Earth's human height growth is going to be reversed. Kill the short b*stard !!!!!
