Haha I thought I did that in the game thread.:D

If you're looking for a breakdown of the game and all the things the Rox did right today, then you're looking in the wrong place......that's what post game reports are for.;)

But if we are looking for all the things the Rox did wrong, especially if they involved Yao not getting the proper amount of touches or shots ......................................

nah...calvin murphy is a great commentator he never takes side...like you said you don't watch the games as often as we do..so it happens that you watch one game where he made more comments about Yao than anyone else...he had made comment how good steve is and steve doesn't need to listens to anyone who tried to change his game.......

    Crikey!

Now you're accusing me of being a YOF. Heck I've been a Rocket fan since Calvin Murphy was playing for the Rox. FYI which is why I was wondering about his comments in the first place.

You seem to misunderstand the fundamentals of basketball. A post player, usually a big man, relies upon a smaller player to bring the ball up and pass it into him to the post. Every center you cited relied upon guards and others to give them the ball. Yes they were dominant but if the guards didn't give them the ball they wouldn't have been. If Kenny Smith didn't pass the ball to Hakeem so much in the 1993-94 season would Hakeem be MVP? Probably not. Its a function of each player knowing their roles. Therefore if Francis passes the ball more to Yao chances are Yao will take more shots and scoring will in all likelyhood go up.

Now before you jump down my throat as saying that's typical of YOF. I'll say that if the team can win every game without Yao touching the ball I would say go for it. Heck I've even said I would be for Yao playing point guard and Francis playing center if that means the Rox win. Ludicrous yes but in the end I don't care how they do it as long as they win.

I figured as much but as I said to jeff, or was it clutch?, that I was surprised Calvin would make those comments after a game where Mobley was the lead scorer and the rest of the Rox had a balanced attack. Yao played a good game against the Celtics but it seemed odd that Calvin would then start talking about how the team will need to be changed to fit Yao.

Sorry for the rapid fire posts at the moment but another question since this posts seems to have touched a nerve here.

Did anyone live in LA or Seattle when Hideo Nomo and Ichiro started playing on those respective teams? Were there a lot of complaints about Nomo or Ichiro only fans from longtime Dodger and Mariner fans?
Plus did Kings fans ever have problems with fan boards being swamped by Turkish Turkoglu only fans?

Finally historically speaking I remember hearing that the Dodgers picked up many more fans when they got Jackie Robinson. So I guess the "only fan" of one particular group isn't new.

Totally off the YOF thing... :)

This is not totally true. It is a much more schemed defensive game today but it is not NEARLY as physical as it was in the 70's and 80's. The league's high scoring period was the 80's when teams were scoring 120 with regularity. However, it wasn't a lack of physicality or defense.

There are a myriad of reasons why the offense for the league has gone down: over-management by coaches, defensive scheming, better athletes making for better defenders, poorer shooters, weaker overall fundamental basketball, more teams meaning dilluted talent pools, players entering the league at much younger ages. All of those things factor in.

Nevermind that the 80's was the golden age for the NBA when it came to players. Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Dream, Drexler, Jordan, Parish, McHale, Bird, Gervin, Wilkins, Isaiah, Mo Malone, Dr. J, Bobby Jones, Mo Cheeks, John Stockton, Karl Malone...I mean, damn, that is one hell of a list compared to today.

In some ways, for dominant big men, this is an easier time to play and a harder time. It is tougher because of the defensive scheming but easier because of the incredible lack of quality big men. Imagine a league with Kareem, Hakeem, the Jones brothers, Laimbeer, Walton, Mo Malone, Sampson, Robert Parish, Mark Eaton and on and on. Every night there was a quality big man on the opposing bench. Compared to then, today is a cakewalk.

I think Yao has a chance to be among the elite big men of the game and I personally am rooting like crazy for him. But, it is just tough to compare the era's. They are SO different. All that matters is that Yao improves and continues to gain confidence. He has all the skills necessary to become one of the greats. Why do you think the greats like Bill Russell come out to see him when he's in town? :)

    Great post.
I think that if many of our Chinese friends, not to mention the fans too young to see anything but ESPN Classic, had had the chance to watch the NBA of that period, we wouldn't be having these threads. Today's NBA is so different from the '80's and most of the '90's as to be damn near unrecognizable.

I'm guessing there are only less than 5% members are YOF on this board. Don't understand Why people keep complaining.

    Just leave them alone.

Perhaps Yao-haters or Steve-only fans always want to label others as YOF to show their presence. :p

because the 5% yell the loudest and have no respect for members who have been hardcore Houston Rocket fans since we were kids...you guys come in here and root for a player because he's the same heritage as you are...thats what this is about....if he was Zimbawaean you wouldnt give a damn..but you can relate to him from a culture and racial standpoint...ok cool...but dammit say your peace and be gone....cause Im tired of your ****.

wish i could of been more eloquent, but you guys piss me off. Im really starting to hate you YOF. I really am.

I can see how that could be annoying to life long rox fans. I'll probably go back into lurker mode, since I've said my piece so far. I just had to speak up to combat all the hate for Yao on this board. It's one thing to criticize, but every second post was calling Yao a girl, a p***y, etc. That is uncalled for in my opinion. Anyways, you've heard the last of me.......for now.;)

I actually don't mind people who root for only one person on the team, its when after a hard fought win people complain. One more thing about that play where Yao was open who gives a crap! It was one play! It's not like they do it intentionally!

thats exactly the crap that pisses me off! Not all Yao only fans are like this though, alot of them bring a great insight into this forum and are very welcome by me but when some YOF degrade the other players on this team and the franchise as a whole its insulting to me as a fan of this team and a resident of Houston.

no guys, we're not hearing eachother. I will tell you right now, I love Yao, everything about him, and I want him to make his mark more than any non-rocket fan who wants him to succeed over the team so he and his family can celebrate and be prideful.. I promise you, these last 3 games where he has set a career record and scored at elast 20points and 10 rebs has given me more satisfaction than the greatest YOF on earth.

Guys, dont stop posting. I just wish you guys would suck it all in and enjoy the victorys a bit more, and save that fire for a loss. Cause, you gotta admit,, things are lookin' pretty good. I see all the stuff youre seeing, and so does most of the fans,, but hey we're gonna go along for the ride...and wait for when the time is right to get pissed off...because that time happens more than enough...theres always a time for that...may happen if we lose to memphis....but this whole day, was good, because our team,,, hit us with a bolt of ecstacy and made me want to not just care about the Rocket power dancers but care about the Rockets just as much. hehe

I don't think there is one rocket fan here who hates Yao, he brings a level of excitement into the game and I love it when he post big numbers and has great games because we usually win and it shows a glimpse of the Rockets future. Whenever Yao scores the whole arena lights up because he is the future of this team and a fan favorite.

there are SF only fans too. Do you find them annoying too? Why aren't they singled out?
People root for someone with some give Bush a damn if he were not a republican? naturally a lot of Asian fans root for Yao, isn't it a thing that the league and Rox want? Get used to it.
