sorry, somehow i missed that everybody was talking exclusively about home attendance rather than "support for the rox"? but wait... nope, many posts here talk about "support for the rox", with many people chiming in from many different town. so probably my point was too far askew from the gist of this discussion - "real" support for the rox versus "fake" yao-only support for the rox. which to me seems to be, uh, support for the rox. here today, gone tomorrow, so what? they support the rox regardless of what city they are cheering in/living in/visiting. people have different motives for doing things. if they are with you ("yof's", hey. love 'em while they are here, trade smack with them when they are traded to toronto...
alas, no edit button. sorry for the word salad. and i even have ieSpell (web message spell check). great, free spell check for message boards.
I became a fan of the Rockets because of Yao, but some of the YOFs are getting very ridiculous. If I were an admin here, I would have banned some of the members already for flooding the BBS with nonsensical posts.
Well, Jeff, I don't see it that way, looking at the numbers you suggest, at least not a a 'fact' without qualification. I was already going to do a statistical comparison between Hakeem 1st 2 years and Yaos...and project Yao's numbers if he took the same number of shots as Hakeem. Another, less serious little study I'm thinking of is projecting Yao's numbers across the board assuming he A) Got Hakeems' fga's, and B) Got his minutes. I feel this is less reliable because it assumes similar endurance factors, which is inaccurate. But it will show us how well he's doing compared to Hakeem for the time he's on the floor, and for the shots he's taking. I think, based on your point here, it would be wise to do the same study with Moses Malone's numbers.
no, wang zhizhi is and always will be a journeyman. yao is the first chinese player to truly break into the consciousness of the average american. there is no way to compare the entrance of wang zhizhi into the nba as an irrelevant side-show to the entrance of yao, a true full time starter for any team because of his talent (yes, even the lakers - who could defend a frontcourt of shaq-yao?). wang zhizhi is the rover. yao ming is the man on mars.
dream in his rookie year scored 20 pts on a team that scored 111 ppg. yao scored 14 pts on a team that scored 94 pts per game. the 84-85 team scored about 22% more than the 02-03 team. if you increase yaos scoring by that amount you will get a number around 17. and theres mpg, and other variables that make it a bad comparison.
Uh unless Yao becomes the point guard he still has to rely on someone to get him the ball so he can take a shot. I'm far from a YOF but I'm pretty sure Yao would take a lot more shots if the guards passed it to him more.
People who would like to see Yao succeed Chinese, for obvious reasons, NBA owners and Mr Stern..Lots OF bling bling from china and exposure.. ie Ichiro N matsui giving MLB a 7yrs/785 millions contract to Japanese brocasters to rights for MLB games,,and lets not forget the billions in tourist N jersey money . With the population in China and its potential wealth in 10 years I can only sees Stern and Nba owners having an orgasm whenever they think about the moona to be made in China. Asian Americans… to quash stereotypes bout Asians and sports. Conservative basketballs fans that like hoops but find “tattooed, bad boy , hip-hop image” ball players to be repulsive. The majority of Americans don’t give a rat azz bout YAO, All those people cheering for him all at big city where there a huge Chinese populations, last years people were at awe cause they never imagined a Chinese person can be that tall and play ball.. but this year he just another player. Yao jersey is not even top 10 selling in America, Yao in their eyes is not an exciting players like Ai Ljames, Kobe to name a few. Its funny how people goes psycho at articles bout people who bad mouth Yao ie: Corey Margguate, And get an orgasm when the likes of Andre agasi praises Yao. Get with the fact that every person has those who hate them who those who like them, YOFs are too obsess with Yao to understand that this is reality. CALVIN Murphy is not an YOF he a rocket fan—and since Yao is a rocket he a Yao fan..And he understands that Yao has the potential with the right cast can take the Rox to the promise land. Personally I think Yao has made quite an impact already on the NBA, the biggest impact of all will probably be that there are lots more Chinese in China picking up a basketball,, and outa 100 millions Chinese boys there will be 1 that would become a flashy Chinese version of AI in 20 years… and maybe he’ll play for the rockets too. Then again Stern wouldn’t be that stupid he probably rig the lottery to make sure he goes to New York I agree with Jeff about sums YOFs on this BBS wanting Yao to be traded and doesn’t understand the rich history with this team. YAO HAS A LONG WAY TO GO B4 HE CAN BE ONE OF THE GREATTEST ROCKETS. I believe YOFs has every right to be a YOFs but ya’ll aINT being nice when u start dissing Yao’s teamates and his team. Show sum love for the city and organization that has open to their arms to the big man from day 1
I know...I said I was done... but I couldnt read the post above and not tell her (I assume Monique is female) that it was an outstanding post...and Im glad someone has caught onto the complexities of the argument. for the record...(once again) Monique's description of Calvin's fan status is exactly how I view the Rockets world. this quote is sooo true of my feelings..It is almost sig worthy. good job Monique...post more often.
Jeff! with respect, it is sadden me also to know that one of the administrator of this forum is not welcome new fans. We are not welcome here since we have very low knowledgable in your eyes. Also you assume that we will never be "true" rocket fans. All the talk about if yao is leaving YOF will leave is in the future. No one can predict if a person will follow the team or not. But you somehow, label all the new fans that follow the team because of yao as a lower class fans. Sorry! that we cause your board the mess. You have very right to show us the door. This is a great board and I thought people here is open minded. I thought that this board will try to integrate people and make the Rocket's fans community stronger. I thought that it would be great for the Rocket to have more fans and is known more world wide as the Lakers. I thought the rocket's fans would be happy if their team is more famous. (I know that they are famous in the past but let face it, Yao make more people know about the rocket especially Asians) Now, I know that Yao's fans and new fans are not really welcome from you. This Calvin Murphy fella is OBVIOUSLY a Yao-Only Fan and Steve-hater. He'll be on the first flight out of Houston as soon as Yao leaves the Rockets. Any thoughts and opinions from him are EVIL!!! He CANNOT BE TRUSTED!!!
I started becoming a rockets fan during the two championship runs. Hakeem's play during then, the way he simply dominated the opponent centers, like Shaq, David Robinson and Ewing, was what got me on the Rockets bandwagon. If Hakeem wasn't part of that team, I probably wouldn't have gotten interested in the Rockets. And if this bbs board existed back then, I probably would have been labelled a HOF _ that is, a Hakeem-Only-Fan _ and it would have been correct. But the more I watched the more I got to know the other players. The team just grew on me and I continued to follow the Rockets even after the Olajuwon era. I guess I'm just saying people may become fans for one player, but they may end up staying for the whole team.
Wow, Jeff has become MacBeth (in post length), and MacBeth is opposing him (in post content)! Yes, dissing the team simply because they don't make Yao look good is annoying. No, not everyone who loves Yao and hates the other players is YOF. Take Yetti. He's a Rockets fan before Yao. I bet he will be after Yao is gone. But he is doing some things here that make him look like a YOF. See what I mean?
I did not see clutch's post before. I would like to know that as well. Clutch! I join this board because of Yao and I want to know more about the rocket. This site is very good at information about the rocket and I enjoy reading all the posts by ignoring Yao's bashers most of the time. I haved tried to be a good member of this board and respect all the rules. However, If I am really not welcome here because I am YOF by definition, I will respectfully leave as you are the one that have authority here and we all are your guests. As dragon167 have said, please do not take offense from this question. I do not have any sarcastic intention. I think that all the new fans would like to know the clear policy as well. Yun
Wrong. Dominant big men become dominant of their own accord, and demand the ball. Yao doesn't do that, because he is not mentally or physically ready to do so. The only thing stopping Yao is Yao. I can't recall any big man in NBA history who required such special treatment from his guards. Not Wilt, not Kareem, not Moses, not Hakeem, not Ewing, not Robinson, not anybody. You might not be a YOF, but that's a tactic straight out of the YOF playbook: blame other (rockets) players for Yao's shortcomings. Yao has himself to blame for not becoming a dominant player yet, (unless he doesn't have the physical capability to do so, which, given his some of his shortcomings re: leaping and catching and quickness, may be thecase).
You guys are really overly dramatic about this. No one hates you or wants you gone. What the average Rocket fan wants from those who came here because of Yao is simply the aknowledgement that it is possible that bias towards your favorite player colors your view of the game. You are more than welcome and we want all the Rocket fans we can get but don't expect to get a warm reception with posts that include: The guards clearly are afraid of Yao stealing their spotlight. Houston is a bad place for Yao. What team would be better? JVG doesn't know how to develop Yao. We should fire Ewing because he isn't helping Yao. (When the team wins) Yao should have stayed in for the fourth quarter so he could score more. The referees don't treat Yao fairly. Notice any trend? Imagine if the reverse were true and Rocket fans went onto a Yao Fan Club bulletin board and posted the opposite. I'm quite sure folks there would immediately go on the defensive. You can't expect to "integrate" yourself into a community when there is a clear bias for the player over the team. I sincerely hope that fans of Yao eventually become fans of the Rockets. I hope that those who aren't as knowledgeable about the game use this opportunity to learn the history and complexities of the game. The irony is that there are plenty here who came here because of Yao who have integrated themselves, have learned about the game, have found a way to post intellegently and still keep their love of their favorite player intact. Those aren't the people that are at issue for me or anyone else. This board is better off for those posters. But that doesn't mean we should all expect to hold hands and sing Kum By Ya because not everyone is that way and this is a board of strong opinions and people willing to voice them.
Jeff, I don't see anything wrong with this. So if I'm complaining such fact, as a lot of guys did, I'll be labled as a YOF and get blasted?
