He wasn't getting the ball enough. He had position plenty of times, but didn't get it. Mostly happened in the second half. McHale seems to teach well, credit him for that. His problem is doesn't have every player's respect. That problem leads to other problems such as defensive effort, the inability to run an offense because certain players blow him off and do their own thing, and poor motivational tactics to play hard against poorer teams. Can he get better? Maybe, but those faults are pretty glaring.
JVG didn't take long to get the team to play one of the top defenses in the league back in 2003. Last year, we were a very good defensive team when Asik was on the floor, and it was a NEW FORMED team, no time to gel. This year, we have most of the core players back. We are supposed to have a slight upgrade from Asik to Howard and a supposedly big upgrade from Lin to Beverley. But our defense has not improved a bit. (We ranked 16th last year and 17th this year so far.) What gives?
