Let me get this straight: you know nothing about this kid, but you want him to succeed just so you can pretend that you saw the writing on the wall the whole time? If he busts, will you be proclaiming how lucky we were not to offer a long-term contract to someone so "unproven"? Grow up, man.

I could just as easily wish that Novak will average 20/10 next year, just to show you how wrong you were about his body not being NBA ready. But not only is that childish, but it doesn't prove you wrong in the slightest. No matter what Novak does in the future, his body is not NBA ready now. You're right about that. Amir Johnson could have a HOF career, but he is not "proven" now in any sense of the word.

Most likely he won't have a HOF career, but if we wait for him to be "proven" we couldn't afford him then. I am not hung up on Amir Johnson, but we are gonna have to take a flyer on somebody soon. Retreads and has-beens are not getting the job done for us. We can't afford a proven Power Forward, unless he has proven that he is at best mediocre. It is high-time that we take a chance on a young PF because the other way has netted us nothing in 4 years.

I just think the Rockets need to take some chances on some young players with upside.

Amir is one of the only ones available at the PF spot right now.

And he is only being offered 10 million over 3 years by Detroit, which should tell a lot about what they think of him.

I would not mind the Rockets overpaying for a chance at basically a free high lottery pick.

I don't see much risk, other than money, and since it is Les' money, I say go for it !!

So you don't regret any of the crippling contracts we've doled out in the past? It's not your money, after all.

Bottom line, no championship-level team overpays for their prospects. We don't need to take risks like this. You want youth on the cheap? Sign Justin Williams out of Sacremento. From what I've seen, and I'm not afraid to admit when I haven't seen much, he's an athletic hard worker. Not much basketball skills, but he's good depth. Ike Diogu for the #26 pick would have been great. Maybe we can still work something out with Indiana.

No, I don't because you can ultimately trade those contracts, look at Mark Cuban, he has taken on junk and turned it into good players.

I am all for taking some other risks, sure why not. I just like Amir because I have seen him play...

Whatever happened to Louis Amundson? IIRC, you had nice things to say about him as well. I agree that we need to take some risks in getting a taller, more athletic PF. Personally, I want to see whether Memphis will keep Alexander Johnson and Lawrence Roberts, both 6-9 PFs.

I can't help but wonder, is he really worth all this hype? I mean, maybe he is overshadowed by a massively deep Detroit team, or maybe just maybe he is just being over hyped because we need to fit a need. Truth be told, with or without a solid man at the PF spot we still look like contenders. Keeping all that in perspective, signing him doesn't really seem like priority number one. Before, under Gundy the excuse was that we were just a PG away from beating Utah, what's changed since then?

this is not something we wanted to see right here

    Deal Almost Done
Jul 9 - Amir Johnson could sign as early as Wednesday and would most likely join the team and play in three games, plus a couple of controlled scrimmages.
The Pistons are getting close to finalizing a three-year deal with Johnson that would pay him close to $10 million.

Joe Dumars has made it clear across the league that he was matching any offer for Johnson, so teams have pretty much stayed away. -- Detroit News

We picked up Mike James for Juwan Howard. Now we have a good PG, but undersized PFs. Mike James might not be perfect, but with Rafer, Brooks, and maybe Steve Francis as backup PGs, our PG position is looking fairly solid. All our potential PFs are undersized. Hayes was undersized, and Battier is simply not a PF.

Unless we seriously upgrade at the 4 and 1, we aren't going anywhere.

We should make a 4yr $15 million dollar deal and call their bluff.

Well, for one thing we just traded away our starting PF. So I suggest we replace him.
