Entering what looked like an overgrown and hidden castle (of the king), Carcosa was the most terrifying setting I think I've ever seen on a show or movie.

Props to the set designer and the work it must have taken too build all the enormous wooden figures within those walls.

Did Marty suddenly get cell phone reception?

No. He asked the woman, "Everyone has a phone. Now where is yours?"

He knew she had one because of that other phone laying out in the open. I assume she told him where it was.

He made the call before he ran after Cohle.

Who in their right mind would have gone into that labyrinth alone? Just unnecessary and no upside.

They found the place, they pinpointed the guy. That was all that was necessary. Wait for the cavalry to arrive and let them do their thing.

So what was that Cole saw right before he was stabbed? Was that supposed to be a portal to hell? Or was that in Cole's imagination?

That was an absolute masterpiece. If following seasons are able to maintain this kind of quality, it'll be an all-timer.

I got the sense that it was him "seeing things" due to his condition.

At the end in the wheelchair, Rust says something to the effect of "We didn't get em all" and Marty responds we got ours.

Do you think Rust meant there were more people involved in these killings or what exactly?

From my memory, there were 5 men involved.

    1. Reggie Ledoux
    2. Guy who was living with Ledoux
    3. Tuttle (who died in 2010)
    4. Erroll Childress
    5. Erroll Childress's dad (dude rotting in the shed)

    What am I missing here?

Which condition? Do you mean because he was dying? It was right before he was stabbed.

Last week Cohle said something like "My life has been a downward spiral of violence and degredation. I'm ready to tie it off."

That isn't the mindset of someone for whom survival is goal #1.

    Cohle should've died.

I was thinking the same exact thing.

But also think. You've spent over a decade hunting this guy down.

He taunts you in the field.

    You've seen what he's done.

You want to catch him and make him pay so bad.

There was a wider conspiracy, Tuttle family members, some of whom were the police involved in the official cover up; administrators of the churches and their schools that served as the scouting system for sacrifice candidates, the old black housekeeper even was part of the "religion".

I suspect the cult had been around for at least 50 years, starting at least with Erroll's dad, though I get the sense it was older than that possibly dating back to slavery (just a feeling from the apparent age of the family compound, which I assume was a sugar cane processing plant)

I thought it was pretty close to perfect, the way everything was done and the characters story arch was excellent throughout. Very curious to see how season 2 fares with the new stars and storyline because the bar has been set very high.

Earlier in the show he said something about the "thing in his head". Right before he was attached he looked up and saw (what I saw as) a planetarium type of display.

The only thing that would have made this show more excellent for the viewer would have been if Nic Pizzolatto, the director, would have kept his mouth/twitter/whatever shut during the season and just let it play out for the viewers to watch and enjoy, even with their "detective" work. He didn't need to debunk so many theories during the season, he should have just laughed it off and let the audience play with their imagination. That's what made this show so excellent. It truly sucks you in. I've never sat down and focused so much on a series.

Anyways, probably a top 3 show I've ever seen. From the opening song to the visuals, to the complicated story line and seeing the destruction of both Marty and Cohle's life to the rebounding friendship...Just absolutely fantastic. I have no idea how they will make season 2 compare to the brilliance of season 1.

I remember sitting down for the first episode, making my wife watch it. She looked kinda bored before it started, kinda like, "What is this ***? (sigh)"

Now it's her favorite TV show, ever.

They did leave some loose ends, but I say that not to quibble, nor to point out that Audrey couldn't have been that much of a red herring (okay, maybe she was), but simply to say that there could be more story there to mine.

This show has "sweep the Emmys" written all over it: McConaughey (will win) and Harrelson, the writing, directing, cinematography.

I remember about halfway through the series, telling my wife that my favorite main character is Louisiana itself. The creepy, humid, backwoods atmosphere.

    Just awesome.

In the earlier episodes, he talked about "seeing things" at random times. He said he got the condition from working undercover in the drugs unit. He did too many drugs and now he sees stuff randomly.

During the episode when he went to dinner at Marty's house, he saw some weird stuff while he was driving.

During this episode, Marty asked him if he still saw things. Cohle said you never stop seeing things. This condition will never go away.

That's the condition I'm talking about.
