I signed a one year contract with SBC for the DSL service at 29.99 per month.

My contract expired last month, and I called them up to tell them I wanted to sign another 1-year contract, rather than pay 50 bucks a month on a month-to-month plan.

They said OK, and I even negotiated a smaller monthly fee.

I have a cable modem at home through charter, and all I have to say is that I have been taking that for granted.

Currently, I am down in Florida on a business trip and having to go through f*cking dialup to get on the Net. Being on a cable modem reminds me of driving a Ferrari while dialup reminds me of driving a Toyota Tercel.

I don't know exactly what it like downloading from 4mbps but I've use T3 at work and it's mighty fast. I think my ISP cable modem is around 3mbps and it doesn't seems to be that fast.

I still remembered back in the old days downloading from the dial up 56k modem and realizes how much time I've wasted downloading 5meg of mp3 that takes 10 to 20 and sometimes up to 30mins! But the amazing thing is that I've managed to download 100 songs with dial up!

    Old days/56k dialup?
Dude, the old days was connecting to the Houston Public Library at 300 baud. :)

    As for T3 vs. 3 Mbit speeds, a T3 should be faster provided it's not overloaded. A T3 is around 45 Mbit/sec.

I thought T3 was only available to the government and military. Somebody told me that, is it not true?

I'm sure if you have enough money you could have OC-192 run out to your summer home.

Really? Like I said, my introductory offer runs out this month so I just assumed it would go up to 49.99 a month. Do they offer discounts if you sign a longer contract?

I've been very happy with my SWB DSL. The only problem I run into is when I talk on the phone, it cuts in and out sometimes. The only reason I'm considering switching is because I assumed the price would go up.

I've heard horror stories about Earthlink as far a customer service goes. Of course, I heard the same things about SWB before I got it but I haven't had any problems whatsoever, so who knows...

I remember Roadrunner's service going "down" a lot during peak hours back when I had it. That was a few years ago, so maybe they've since fixed it since then. It seems pretty expensive either way. But if it really is "10 times faster than DSL" (I find that hard to believe) then maybe it's worth it.

EDIT: Man, just checked the poll results! Not even close.

Earthlink's customer service bad? I have my cable here in H-Town through Earthlink/Time Warner, but I never deal with Earthlink, even though I signed up through them. My bills and tech support all come from Time Warner. But I still get the great price that you get from Earthlink.

I had Swbell DSL for a year and switched the day my year contract was up. Cable is much faster for me, it's cheaper, and most importantly, there is NO CONTRACT.

Funny, I was just about to ask a similar question. Right now we have Road Runner and at least 2 times a month, the service shuts down completely in our area (SW Houston/Missouri City area). When it's working, everything is great, but connectivity is more imporant than speed to me. Those times when I can't connect to the internet, I have to go to the library and its a big inconvenience. DSL users, how often does your service go down, if at all, and are there any other problems? Thanks

sbc's dsl service is great for me. i only pay 26.95 now instead of 29.95 a year ago. i get about 160 KB/sec dls and 15 KB/sec upload speeds which is very nice for the price. roadrunner is good as well and lil bit faster in my area than my dsl i have right now. i would recommend the sbc dsl for the great price. anyone with aol, msn, or whatever and is paying 21.95 is kinda crazy. i think u could pitch in a extra few bucks a month for dsl service and it doesnt tie up ur phone line, so u dont need the extra line or people need to use the phone.

As long as you're willing to sign another one-year deal, they'll work with you. I told them I wanted a discount since I was a loyal customer, I jumped through a few hoops, and they finally agreed.

I have both DSL(business) and Cable Modem(Home)....both are great, but I like the Cable Modem speed better...I talked to them and they brought my monthly charge down to 29.99 for 6 months.

Did SWB send you an in-line filter to plug your phone into??
