What did Maddux get in arbitration? I would think coming off of a Cy Young season with a sub 3 ERA would tend to make the arbitrator lean the Rocket's way. On the other hand, Randy Johnson had a superior season and signed for 16.5 million, but also got a 4 year deal.
why roger could get the 22mil is because the astros offer of 13.5 is really low. Pedro makes 17 randy johnson 16 etc. For a one year deal the astros should have offered at least 16. the man won the cy young so its hard not to award him a higher number over a lowball. They will negoiate before going to arbitration though.
award him $6 million more per year than RJ?? to a guy who doesn't want to travel with the team? it's not gonna happen. the astros low number is low by about $3 million. His is high by about $7 million. No one else is making anywhere close to $22 million.
I agree and disagree. The Beltran fiasco was a disaster, but it does allow us some payroll flexibility either this season or next offseason. Of course, haters will just say that they Uncle Dreighton McLain won't ever spend that money, so it's like arguing with a brick wall. The Miller thing doesn't bother me as much because the lowest we could've signed him for was $2.72 or so, I believe. The guy missed more than half of the season last year, so I can't fault them too much for letting him go with those concerns. Also, the offseason isn't over. What we don't know as fans in regards to what's going on in the offices over there could fill an ocean, despite some people's assertions that they know everything. I'd be surprised if we stood pat with what we have now. To be honest with you, if Clemens comes back-and I think he will-I don't think we'll be nearly as horrible as a lot of people on here believe. I think it'll be exciting to watch a young team with guys like Burke, Backe, Lane, Ensberg, Everett, and possibly someone like Tavarez or Astacio. With Berkman (if he can comeback strong from his injury), Bagwell, Biggio, Pettitte, Oswalt and Clemens, I think there's a strong possibility that we will contend in the Central. I don't think it's for sure either that we will, but it's silly to write off the season in January. And if we are contending, Dreighton will have make the moves to bring in what we need. He's proven that with Randy Johnson, Pedro Astacio, Mike Williams, Carlos Beltran, etc.

He will settle though. I can't see someone who's already agreed to continue a relationship with the Astros after he retires not end up settling on something like this.

Only because you brought it back up will I respond...me saying that nothing is going on is no different than you saying that Tim and Drayton are working around the clock on plan W....or is it X now. We didn't compete in the Central last year and the Cards are the same or better while we, as much as you may disagree, got much worse. This makes zero sense.
I'd be suprised, should Roger decide to play again, if he didn't take the Astros offer of $13.5 million or something close to that. I'm guessing it will end up around $15 mil. $22 million is just a number that Roger's team threw out there. They obviously know that isn't what they are getting even if it went to the arbitrator.
Pay *The Man*, promote this year as Roger's last dance, count the money, and revisit this whole retirement thing next year. BTW, I blame RC for winning the Cy Young. It must have went to his head. Damn him for being so good!!!
In what way are the Cardinals better than last year? Losing Renteria, Womack, Matheney hurt a hell of a lot more than adding Eckstein and Mulder.
Well, I take it as a positive sign that Roger is thinking he will play next year. When Roger pitches the Astros sell out, It's not too hard to out a number on what that's worth, so it's not really about how his skills compare to the market. It's about tickets and beer. Drayton McLane is worth a billion dollars. Who wouldn't want the biggest chunk of that you could gouge out. Especially if you have all the leverage, "pay me or I quit". Now he's seen as the cheapskate that made Roger Clemmons retire. And really if he pays him 22 mil it's no skin off his ass, he'll never notice it. I think they will reach a deal, it may include some future ownership (but that's illegal ) And it won't cost us TV fans anything out of our pockets...cool.
